Stuck in First
« on: October 07, 2007 - 01:15:36 PM »
Took the Challenger out today for a quick ride to the store and on the way home I could not get it out of first. So I had to drive it home in first for part of the way then a few blocks from home and came out of first and shifted fine after that. The tranny was recently freshened up with synchros and a new clutch and has been working good. What are some of the areas I should be looking at, linkage etc?

Hearing you write that it is a fresh rebuild makes me think maybe binding linkage?

Try rechecking the shifter adjustments. Also see if the nut holding the arm to the trans has loosened up .The handle will move but not allow the arm to move the fork inside the trans.
Also 50% of shifting problems are in the clutch adjustment.

What syncro rings were used in the rebuild , if they are the Mopar ones they are not made correctly [Mopar new about the problem but still continued to sell them ] , they are too thin , , I would guess one of the keys popped up too high with a thin ring &  locking it into gear

Start with the easy fixes first. More than likely it's a linkage/shifter problem. Check for loose linkage, improperly adjusted linkage or shifter. I've seen improperly adjusted or worn shifters and linkage jam in gear before.
