gas tank vent
« on: September 19, 2007 - 09:50:00 PM »
On my72 Cuda, I see the one fuel line coming out but what about the vent tube. There were 4 going into a small tank that are cut. I am not using the emmisions stuff and just want to vent the tank up and then out the bottom. Could I just run the vent into that tank? Is there just one vent coming off the tank? Any ideas how or where I should run that vent?

I don't think I would run any lines for a vent . . I would just get a vented gas cap and forget about it.  Less hassle.

I assume you just plugged the 4 lines going out of the tank, right?

On my '73, there are the 4 vent lines coming off the tank as well. Problem is, I couldn't find a vented gas cap that fit my filler neck to allow for the venting so I am stuck with the tank vent. There has to be a vent somewhere, or gas won't flow. A '70 or '71 ebody gas cap wouldn't fit; I tried. An alternative would be, so I was told, drilling a vent hole in the gas cap somewhere, but I wasn't so sure that this wouldn't allow spillage or the escape of gas fumes into my garage, when full, so I am back to square one.  Another concern that I had, is that if you just run a line somewhere for a vent,  is there a chance that spillage, or the smell of gas fumes from that would occur. Maybe some kind of one way valve installed at the end of the vent line, which would allow for venting in, but prevention of spillage out is the way to go. I just haven't figured out what kind of valve, or if there even is a valve out there that could work for that.

what you could do is what they did in the late 60's.they only had one vent line.

plug three of the vent tubes. use one of them for venting.  what they used was a tube from the tank thur the trunk floor up to underneath the trunk lid(under the side lip-hidden) with a loop-then it then goes back down thur the trunk floor and it was left opened and dumped into the frame rail- I presonally would make sure it would end as low as it could go- below the tanks bottom line-thus if the car is turned over the vent tube would fill up but due to the line now is above the tanks fill line there should be no gas leaking out.

Just looked through an older post that I made on this same subject, where Bullitt99 ( I think ) found this little jewel. Seems to be what I was looking for and I will be ordering mine soon.
Also, you mentioned that your 4 vent lines all go to one tank. That tank is, in effect, a manifold that goes into a single vent line further forward. I have re-hooked all 4 vent lines to that manifold and am going to use the single vent line from there.
The following is Bullitt's info:
                            http://www.kevinscycleracing.com/intakeandcarburetor.htm
ONE-WAY CARBURETOR VENT HOSE CHECK VALVES Special miniature One-Way Check Valve will allow your carburetor to properly vent and drain as necessary, while helping to protect your carburetor and engine from water traveling up the vent lines. Place inline with the arrow pointing to the ground. Sold Each. $4.95

I too have a funky gas cap that doesnt fit too well and planned to plug 3 of the vents and use one to go up and then down like the pre emission cars, but that check valve may be even better.
