I had initially assumed the the Electronic Control Unit with the MP Electonic Ignition kit would replace the original Voltage Regulator but now I think that is incorrect. Can somone confirm that I need to retain both?

The ECu controls the spark in the ignition system. The voltage regulator controls the voltage in the entire system, so yes, the voltage regulator must be retained when the electronic ignition is added.
