RV 727 Trans for sale - need information
« on: September 24, 2007 - 09:10:53 PM »
Hey guys,

Okay, now that you all got me searching on craigslist, I found this RV 727 transmission for sale for $50!!

I'm been speaking with the seller, who said that I'll have to replace the output shaft and the tail housing on this unit for it to fit in my 'Cuda.  (Apparently he too has or had a 73 'Cuda so he knows what's involved.)

I have the skills and most of the tools I need to rebuild a transmission, which I plan on doing for whatever I end up buying, just so that I know exactly what I have and the quality of the parts.  Can anyone back-up the need to replace those components, and give general ideas on what it would cost for the parts (since labor isn't an issue for me) and where I can GET those components from?

Also, are the components of this tranny going to be heavier-duty than a standard 727?  I'm still aiming (albeit quietly) for a 500hp output from the motor I eventually build - will this be able to handle it?

I'm basically trying to decide whether to go over and pick this thing up.  For the price it can't really be beat - question is am I just going to end up getting rid of it later because it's too expensive to convert, or still can't handle what I'm looking to do with it.

The seller is holding it until I respond in the next day.  Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Yes,an "RV" tranny will have a special tail housing and output shaft to hold the parking brake drum (they don't have a parking pawl due to the weight it would be holding.) It also means the Valve body will need to be changed also. They will be four clutch drums and four pinion planetary like an older big block tranny. What year is it?

Ugh - tail housing, output shaft AND valve body??  Too much trouble.  By the time I buy all those parts and rebuild this thing I can get a standard 727 for half as much...

$50 would be an OK deal for someone like me that had the other stuff laying around already. If you can get a regular 727 for $50,that would be the way to go,they are more common than a "RV" model.

Would that parking brake drum be like on the old  > 1964 transmissions..??

What is the valvehouse problem..??

I'm in need of a trany for my 1959 DeSoto, and only reason I aint just swappin a newer engine and trans in it, is the p-brake problems..

You should just buy a old mopar boat, you will get a 440, and the right tranny.

The motor home trans will have the low 1st gear.  IMO  it is worth $50 to get the gear and use it in a car/truck 727. You might get the trans cheaper than $50 if you make an offer to the guy.

:grinno: No 727's came with any different low gear ratio's from the factory.

I thought they had a lower gear.  Back in the 80's there was something in the motor home trans that everyone wanted.  Did they have the 5 to 1 kick down lever?  I wish I remembered what it was.  It has been too long.

You are probably thinking of the "straight cut" planetary gears. They put those in alot of early motor home trannies (G.M. and Chrysler) so there was no side thrust on the gear train when starting those big rigs moving from a dead stop. They quit putting them in eventually.

These are normal "helical" or spiral cut gears.the straight cut were,well.......  straight.
