Console mounted cassette recorder/player
« on: September 04, 2007 - 06:01:52 PM »
I have recently aquired my cassette player. when i bought it, it was missing the small filler shroud that takes up the gap between the console and the player. i am wondering how this piece attaches and what shape its in,
3 sided (open in the back) or 4 sided. i've seen it before, just not seperate.

and can someone tell me if there are shims or anything to level the player out in the car? mine sits a little off level toward the passenger side.  Pics would be awesome guys!!

I've never even taken mine off the console when I pulled it out of my Chally. I do however have a few pics of it I took a while ago that may help you out.

Let me know if you don't see what you need to know. I can pull it out of storage and snap some more pics if needed.

What do those cost, if you can find them.  I wouldn't mind having an 8 track player either.

that does help a little. thanks. Id like to see how "off level" it sits on the top of the console, but i wouldnt want you to have to dig it out. im sure someone will show up with one.

as for the cost, i paid $500 for mine. and it doesnt even record, so to say the least its hard to find. 8 track, even harder.

$500 doesn't sound bad, I paid $500 for my AM/FM for my 70 Challenger.

... At least I believe Year One is re-popping the microphone now.

So what do people do with these anyway?? "Note to self, buy toilet paper on the way home from work."  :smilielol:

Well thats good to know. How about the value of this one? I have no idea if it works since I tore the interior out before I even tried to mess with it. I want to sell it and the radio with that special connector that goes with it. It doesn't have a mic, but, as someone mentioned, they are being repopped now at least. The top plastic piece has a small part broken off of it and someone previously tried to glue it back (didn't work obviously) though and it would need to be completely restored.

I couldn't figure out how to get the bottom of the tape deck out so I could remove it from the console. I ended up just taking a grinder to the screws coming out of the bottom of the reinforcement plate (pic #4) and then pushed them up through the top. That worked well enough but the support plate underneath the console really should be replaced. Either that or just use nuts and bolts instead of screws to put it back together.

BTW: I hope these pics help you out a bit more. It was really no problem getting to it. I only had to move the Ram, the Chally, the 511 on the engine stand, and four motorcycles to get to it. :smilielol:

I seem to recal something about Chrysler trying to market these cars to secretaries for some reason. The tape recorder was supposed to help them dictate notes for their job. That explanation sounds like a bunch of bull hooie if you ask me though. The guys that usually ended up buying these cars had no use for the extra weight of this option so not many people checked that block on the order form. That little box on the console weighs at least 10 lbs if I had to guess.

man that helps alot. i greatly appreciate it. honestly you could pull an easy $500 for that. if you want to pull it totally apart, you remove those screws on the side, pull the shroud away like the one pic and drop the other down. loosen that bolt on the back and the player will slide up and back (toward the imaginary dash) then the screws that hold the base to the frame are under there - its alot of hastle but needed.

thanks again!!!!!! you're funny, haha

if you want to sell it, Ebay is the way or take it to carlisle - there are never more than 2 or 3 there.

start high, especially if you are selling the radio with it.

I am actually in the market for an AM with that cord b/c mine sort of started smoking when i first built the car. Im sure you dont want to split the pair, but .........

I wish it was that easy. I tried to see how it was attached but there were two wierd looking rivits on either side. One toward teh front and one towards the back. The way they're in there wouldn't allow me to remove it the way you described. If they weren't there I could have done it that way. Soooo, that's why I ended up removing it the way I did.

Do you have all the under support pieces for the cassete deck you have now?

I don't plan on using any of it in the rebuild so PM me about the radio/deck if you want to. I'll give it about a week here before I put it on Ebay.

Well, i am missing the little trim piece that takes up the space between the recorder and the console. so im REALLY in the market for that particular piece. and the radio isnt a huge neccessity depending on price (not to be cheap) but i heard a fellow C-C member here say they paid $500.

I certainly will not low ball you, we all know how hard our cars parts are to find. but, i do have paypal - so If you want to message me with a price if you are willing to seperate anything, Id be quite happy to talk business! wally426ci@yahoo.com - if you cant ge ta message through here, i havent tried that feature yet.

thanks again, hope to hear back from ya soon!!!!!!
