Yeah I saw that on a Muscle Car episode yesterday, it's really a good idea since it does not rob any engine horse power.  I think they were using a Toyota unit though???

Thats what i was thinking, something constantly moving. Not a great move on a street ride

Do you think using a Denso is a bad choice? Why?

I think Nascar allows this.

You would be putting a somewhat sensitive electrical device out in the open, so expect the life span to drop as they are exposed to dirt, water, salt, etc. that the race guys do not deal with on a track.

As far as more power, I don't think it would make a difference. To replace the charge used up during idling, the alternator would be more heavily loaded during driving. You think the lights dimming at idle are bad now, take the alternator completely out of the circuit and watch things get dim. Plus, you aren't really eliminating the charging load. All you are doing is moving that load from the engine to the driveline. The drag is still there. An easier change would be to add a toggle switch to disconnect the field of the alternator when you running in the upper rpm range. That is still only worth a few horses at best.

No, no opinion on that, I just remember that they were using it because it was very small.

Everythign uses engine power. It's just after the torque is multiplied. Also, when you're stopped, or at less than 30mph depending on pulley and design, you have no charging. Plus the weather issues. Bad idea...

IMHO, Although it looks pretty trick and MIGHT free up a horse or two, I am going to assume that the car companies that engineer, design, and build millions of cars every year would mount their alternators there if it were a great idea for street cars.  Besides the exposed nature and the no charge while idling issue, you also get to have a big old electrical wire run along five or six inches from the ground most of the length of the car.  While this is common when moving the battery to the trunk in a race car, I also prefer not to do that on my street cars.
