Anybody own a Nikon D-80
« on: October 01, 2007 - 11:42:41 AM »
I am getting ready to bite the bullit and move up in digital camera's. I have owned Nikons all my life and want to stick with them. Just curious if anybody out there has a D-80 and if they like it..

not the d80, but i own the d70s and love it.  put about 1000 shots through it and an 18-70 and its just fantastic.  i somewhat arbitrarily chose nikon over canon (well what pushed me over was paul simon and kodachrome  :screwy: ) but i couldnt be happier.  nikons DSLRs are fantastic

My brother has the d200 and hasnt had any issues with it.  (The d80 is a slower d200 in a plastic body)
The D200s will drop when the D300 hits the market.

Personally, ditch the Nikon and go Canon! :poopoke:

Yup, I have a 6MP Canon EOS 300D. Plastic case but takes very impressive pics. Am sure the Nikon digital SLR will be a comparable product.

I have a D70, about the only drawback to me :2cents: is that the D80 only uses an SD memory card. Seems like there are more options with Compact Flash memory, just my opinion. Nikon or Canon, I don't think you can go wrong with either. If you already have nikon lenses, switching brands can be a pretty expensive option. I'm really interested in seeing what the prices do when november/december roll around and the D3/D300 are out. I think a D200 might be in my price range at that point.

As ntstlgl1970 said, "Nikon or Canon, I don't think you can go wrong with either"
For those that don't know much about camera gear, the rivalry between Nikon and Canon is almost as strong as the Cheby / Mopar one.

Buy decent memory cards be it SD or CF. Stay away from ebay for them.  Most of the ones on there are Chinese clones/fake and run very poorly.
The 18-200 VR is supposed to be a great lens.  It sells for less than 1k.

www.bhphoto.com is highly recommended by tens of thousands of people.
I prefer to buy locally so that I can get a feel for what I'm getting before forking out a few grand.

I've spent more money on my camera in the last year than I have my car... :faint:

Look into the Nikon D50. It is actually a better camera than the D80. I love the smaller size and  bought one of the body w/ 2 lenses kits which is a really nice set up. I can do absolutely everything I need to do, except for the really long distance shots with that kit. With that being said, I'd also consider the newest, which is the D40. A friend bought one and has bet me that I'll trade in my D50 if I used the D40 for any amount of time. That remains to be seen though....

Check KenRockwell.com for some good info on cameras and a lot of related stuff. He does comparisons and evaluations on a lot of different photo related stuff. Easy to read and understand.

I've got a Nikon D50 and it's worth it's weight in gold (to me at least).  This camera is fantastic!  Takes awesome shots and I upgraded my lense to a Tamron 28-300.  Got a couple of filters for it too, they work awesome.  You can see some of my pics at www.robertfahey.com/gallery.  Not all of those pics are from my Nikon, but the first page or 2 of galleries are.  I'm not the greatest photographer, but this camera has made trips and events alot more exciting for me.  I've got 2000+ images on this bad larry since owning it 2 years ago and it still works great.  :2thumbs:
