Floor Pans
« on: June 21, 2004 - 08:32:46 PM »
Hey Guys,
Ordered my floor pans and trunk pans from Auto Body Specialties and got them today. They had the best prices all around.

Here are some before and during pics.

OK...Got the front section in yesterday. That is work!!!  I still have more work to do to finish the front, then I have to get into the rear pan. I figure that the pan looks as good as the factory installation. The factory seams and welds are pretty rough.

All done!
Here are a couple more shots.
I'm getting good at this! The PS rear pan took about 4 hours in total: 1.5 to cut out the old and 2 or so to put in the new.

The fit was good.

I've heard that most of the exterior panels you can buy from just about anyone have questionable fit. This is probably due to a variety of factors including the tooling used for the repo panels and the fact that these cars were massaged at the factory to make things fit. The only good thing that I've heard about replacement metal are the GM panels being reproduced by Goodmark. I've heard that they hang and fit just like the original GM stuff. The cost involved in tooling and refining that tooling is staggering. There just aren't enough E-bodies out there to justify that kind of investment, but supposedely, Goodmark is putting OEM quarters and other parts out in the next year or so. Those pieces will fit very well.

The next project involves doing the trunk pans and extentions. That'll happen when the car gets back from blasting.

Looking good!

It's a great feeling to look into the car and see just floor, and not ground, isn't it? ;D

That first pic. reminds me of mine  :-\
Ya... almost the exact same as mine too, cept I've cut a bit more out. And mine doesn't
look as shiny when it's in. :(

Definitely looking forward to the trunk pans and extensions, cuz I'm not on that part
yet and still had a few questions when I get there.

I agree. Aftermarket sheetmetal is almost enough to make me give up the hobbie.  Anyway, Sombody has  to have the original Dies used to make the sheetmetal.  I'm assuming Chrysler has it boxed up somewhere in a giant warehouse.  Why not sell it and let a restoration company begin producing OEM style sheetmetal?  there has to be some way to make a profit.  Stephens Performance is selling Cuda fenders with out gills for $750 a pop...
