What if.
« on: October 04, 2007 - 11:37:58 AM »
I'm by no means near ready to do it, but just suppose:

I'll be putting together a motor for my 74 Challenger.  I have a 74 440 block in good shape.   New production 6-pack setup, 833OD tranny, 3.55 sure grip rear.  No air.  Running it weekends on the street, to cruise-ins.  Probably no real long drives, mostly 5 - 10 mile highway hops & around town.  Maybe a 30 mile highway cruise once in a while.  Don't care about lumpy idle, economy,  just wanna go fast from time to time.

I'm considering a 512 Stroker kit from 440 Source,  their aluminum heads, gasket matched & cleaned up, no major porting.  First off, is this a good starting point for roughly $2600, fully balanced?  http://www.440source.com/

Next, what cam ?  I'm leaning towards a hyd. roller.

1.6 rockers ?

I plan on a hi-vol oil pump, 5 qt. pan, electric water pump.

Lastly, no giggle juice, turbos or blowers.  I figure with $2600 in the stroker kit & heads, I've pretty well stretched the budget as it is.

This decent bang for the buck ?  Other ideas ?

Just throwing around some ideas,

If you use a high volume oil pump, you better use a bigger oil pan than 5 quarts or you run the risk of having all your oil up stairs and suck air in the pan.

For what you want, I dont think I'd recommend the heads yet. They are unproven, and issues with them will shut down the project if it's already stretched. I woudl rather have a 505 (.030 over 440 with 4.25 stroke crank) with basic good parts, than go with 1.6 rollers and exotic stuff. With the new 6bbl, you'll need the jet plates for something that large. To be able to properly set it. It doesnt sound like much, but with the plates, jets, and vacuum pod springs, you're adding $250. Then you have ignition, headers, etc. I think I'd go something like this: 4.25 stroke kit w/dished pistons, RPM heads, hydraulic cam in the 245°@.050 range, MP thickwall rocker pkg, 6bbl, MP distributor/box, factory oil pan, water pump housing, Carter fuel pump...Just basic parts that carefully done right, will make 570-600 pound feet of torque and 540hp or so. The machining and correction of the heads should push the budget to around  $7K for all new parts.

I just fired this engine last night , 440 .050 over with dished pistons & 7.1 " con rods , windage tray 6 qt pan HP oil pump & a UltraDyne solid cam 245* @ .050 with 580 lift , it actually worked out cheaper to do the stroker then to rebuild the stock crank & rods & order new pistons brgs & rings , I would definatly recommend doing this , personally I would order Indy EZ heads over he Eddys , your call , you could even do 440-1 heads with the Indy dual plane intake , heads & cam are where the power is made . the UltraDyne cams would not need 1.6 rockers but depending o nthe grind used 1.6 rockers are an option . I prefer the mechanical water pumps generally they will not leave you stranded if the electric motor fails & are easily replaced

First off, thanks for the replies.

The 1.6 rockers probably would be an unnecessary expense.  I definately agree that a bigger oil pan is needed, must have been asleep when I typed in 5 qt.  By the time this happens, the heads will be well proven, good or bad, hehe.  Already own the 6-pack, so I'm sticking with it ( plus they're just too Old School ).  I have 2 Moroso electric pumps ( the belt & pulley kind ) so I will keep a spare in the tool kit.

I'm hoping that the 440Source heads work out because of the price,  I'll either have to get them or rebuild a set of the 906s I have.

Those moroso electric pumps are only recomended for race cars making 1/4 mile passes at a time....and dont have a lot of flow!
un ported eddy heads will do you just fine...

Meziere pumps ar erated for a longer life span but they are difficult to mount guages into & alt & PS brakets need to be fabricated to fit & have no provision for heater outlets , again I feel they are more race application & would use an alum housing & high flow mechanical pump on my car

With the 6bbl in hand, normal rockers, and staying with the mechanical cooling system, the cost goes down a  aways. Less than $5K for sure. Edelbrocks are still just over 50% the cost of Indys. Hence my usage...lol.

You could use the aluminum WP housing and get a front mounted CSR electric pump. The issue of rerouting the fan belts would still exist, as well as the necissity of using electric fans on the radiator. However, it is can be done with some work and thought.
