727 question
« on: January 17, 2004 - 06:15:37 AM »
Just got my 360 home last night ( bought a spare )  and it has a 727 Auto on the back of it.  It supposedly came out of a late 70's or so Van.  First off, is it usable in an E-Body.  I'll get the numbers off it if there's a chance. ( Too dark right now )  ;)

Thanks,

Sounds like a good buy..  How much did you pay?
Those 360s are cheap horsepower and they all have
the good rods and useable heads...

Is there some sort of funky tailshaft on that 727?
that's the only part I can think of that might be
different on a van.

The tailshaft on the 727 is long and thin, looks about the same length overall as a long tailshaft 833 & bellhousing.

I got the 360 & 727 pretty cheap, I'll probably sell the 727 to get some money to start rebuilding the 360.

If the freezing rain ever quits, I'll get some numbers.

DodgeFreak,

I'm near Dayton, OH.

I'll measure the 727 and compare it to the 833 & bellhousing.  My Challenger has a 904, so that's no help.  Not gonna swap the 727 in cause the Challenger deserves an 833 OD  ;D.

There are no differences between the van and car Torqueflites dimensionwise. The van 727 MIGHT have a 4 clutch front drum setup, as opposed to the 3 clutch setup found in a lot of the car 727s.

392heminut,

Would that be a good thing ?  I don't mind sounding ignorant when it comes to automatics, all I've ever really owned is 3 & 4 speeds ( other than my Chebbie Van ).  ;D

An extra clutch never hurts! The hemi 727s had 5 clutches.

# Standard Duty 727 D31
# Heavy Duty 727 D32

holy crap?!? is this true? am i dreaming? can i replace my 3 spd 727 trqflite with a 4 spd 727? or even a 5 spd?? (doubt i'll ever find a 5 spd though)

you will have made my year if this is true.

are the 4 spd 727's 'weaker' than the 3 spd's or anything?

keith,

I think you're confusing # of clutches with the # of gears ( speeds ).  A 5 clutch 727 still only has 3 forward speeds.  :'(  Just a lot stronger.

Ok........when keith said 5 spd this got me thinking...........Gearvendors........how does that work is it internal or external like the klunv things for 4X4s that go between the Tcase and Trans....If the Gearvendors is internal could you put one in a 518 that would add a 4th gear and then you could have your OD??  Depending on the 4th gear ratio the GV adds...that would be cool....5spd auto hummmmmmmmmm....just a thought???  :-\ :'(

The GV unit is an add on , you remove the extension housing & it couples with the output shaft
