New member w/? on rare Barracuda.
« on: January 09, 2004 - 05:27:35 PM »
Hi there, I'm new here, came over from moparpages where I was refered from. I recently purchased 2 barracudas, here are the specs on those cars.

1970 Barracuda 383/4spd pistolgrip (not a cuda a Barracuda). It is Factory Vitamin C, ps, painted mirrors, front swaybar, 3:55 suregrip, duel exaust and rimblow steering wheel and a front rubber bumper,am-fm. How many were made? Is it rare?

1971 Barracuda Campaign car. This car was sponsored by the factory in a east coast dealership contract. The car was delivered in October 1970 for stock automatic class racing. It has been painted several colors, but the car was originally bright yellow. When I purchased this car, it came with the following things:

Signed contracts to Chrysler
Trophies
Spec sheets
Racers contigence forms
Racetrack forms
Insurance forms
Sponsor lists
Chrysler order forms
Pictures of all paint schems on cars (8 in total)
6 383 engines
4 automatic trans missions
a Dana60 w/4:56
4 driveshafts
2 Sixpack fiberglass hoods w/part numbers?

The car came to me as no front suspension or grill, but it has alot of weird things in it.

Where the engine code would be in the vin, there is a Z and on the fendertag, there is a E99 code?

Also this car has ZERO options. The fender tag has almost nothing on it, it's only a quarter full. Even the doors seem funny, as they seem thinner or light in some way. Did they ever acid dip doors?

How rare are these cars? They both need resto, but no rust or damage, so they are pretty clean. Any info would be nice. I'll see about posting some pictures in a couple of days when I have some time.

Thank you for any help you can give!

Welcome, I'd say you should not consider selling either of those cars, don't know the numbers, but would guess there is reason to use the word "rare" in their description, for sure CP will be able to enlighten us on this.

The "Z" in the VIN denotes a "Special 8-Cylinder". What that means, I'm not sure, but I'd haphazard a guess that that means a race or experimental motor. I'm sure CP can fill you in a lot better than I can.

Awesome cars , Welcome to this site , the 383$spd Barracuda was relatively rare , but it was the biggest combo available in a Barracuda so anyon ecould option a car this way
The Campaign car is an awesome find  as stated the Z code is a special engine < a lot of subtle tricks were used by the factories in those days , possible the sid eimpact beam were left out of the doors or acid dipped

Hi migsBig, those sound like very unusual cars!

I've sent you a PM (personal message) if you want you can e-mail me back at : stwheels@shaw.ca

I might be able to help you figure out some of the background on the cars as I have an E-body registry with about 7000 cars in it.

LAst JUly 4th weekend at Seattle Intl Raceway - they had a big vintage car fest/races-  among the cars was Sam Posey's  ex Trans-Am Challenger.  Anyhow I talked with current owner and sat in it, etc.

The door weighed about 5 lbs !!!!    :)

He said it had been acid dipped, and stripped internally.

So maybe your has been dipped as well-

Interestingly, the trunklid felt to be the stock weight- maybe to put more weight over axle ??

Awesome that the racer came with so much documentation !
