The 71 style with a Thermoquad will be a better combo for power, the last 3 digits on a correct 71 intake are 100

Completely different, the 71 TQ intake is much better design than any other factory intake except for the 340 six pack.

I always heard that change alone made quite a bit of horse power over the 70 unit. Many people hate the Therms but my brother in law has a 71 340 'Cuda and I love the big secondary openings and the way it sounds when you punch it

oh, i see. well, i plan on keeping the edelbrock if that matters. does anyone have a preferance between the 2 designs?? or will it not make a big difference?

A well tuned TQ and factory intake will make mincmeat of an EB on a 70 intake. Pure and simple.

Is the (early) '72 TQ intake any different?

No, nothing substantial, intake is basically the same. A 72 TQ is a better carb than a 71, 71 was a one year only carb with oddball with air adjust screws, they went to wet flow after that, much easier to tune as well.

The '71 casting number is 3512100. I posted on moparts about one I found and it came back to be a '71. I have a '71, and a '72. They look externally identical, but the numbers are way different.
