833 Overdrive Trans Liberty Gears
« on: November 01, 2007 - 09:56:18 PM »
I saw an add for an 833 overdrive trans for an E body.  I called the guy and he said it was rebuilt by liberty gears in michigan.  My first question is does anybody here know anything about them or their work.  Next he told me that for the overdrive gear to fit they had to reverse 3rd and 4th because the over drive gear is pretty big.  So is this going to work with my stock shift rods?  He said it was fine.  Next hear are the gears that he said were in it.

GEAR RATIOS:
1st. - 1:2.66
2nd.- 1:1.40
3rd.- 1:1
4th.- 1:0.73

Any thoughts on these?  I have a 3.55 in my car now.  Are those tranny gears good for hole shots and the track?  Lastly he said that this was an original E body trans.

Any of your thoughts would be great.

Thanks,

Matt

Liberty used to Supply Mopar with upgrade 4 spd parts decades ago , how long ago was this trans built ?
the 3/4 lever is inverted often needed a slight tweak to the rod to clear the crossmember int he forward positon but yes the factory rods will work
I can get you a 833 OD truck trans with 3.09 first & the same ratios inthe other gears if interested , it also uses 3rd for OD & inverts the shift lever

The trans has about 250 miles on it and he wants 550 for it.  I am pretty sure that I am going to go for it.  I just wanted to get your opinion.

Thanks

1st. - 1:2.66
2nd.- 1:1.40
3rd.- 1:1
4th.- 1:0.73

Those work out fine (I believe the 1:0.73 is a factory OD ratio offered in late 70's Mopars). As far as durability the Liberty gears are super strong but the factory aluminum cases are questionable under race conditions, they are ok but not nearly as strong as Passon Performances new castings (about $500.00 complete) which are thicker and better material. Also, the originals do not have a front case bushing, something you'll need to change if it hasn't been done already, Passons come with one installed already.

I thought the 3rd gear was the over drive and during the shifter install you inverted the linkage.

So,

In actuality you will be shifting 1st, 2nd, 4th ( 1:1 ), 3rd ( the O.D. Gear )  meaning that the countershaft is spinning, with power going through it, while cruising in O.D.  The input bearing is beefier to help offset this.  You'll probably want to inspect the roller bearings from time to time as they will be getting extra use.

Still, it's a very good way to go.

That is correct , 3rd is the OD gear so the countershaft pin & rollers will wear more
