Vehicle Weights with big blocks

does anyone have proof of what their big block challenger or cuda weighs??? full interior of course...thx

this has me puzzled since 500stroker says his challenger weighs 4115 without driver ???

I was told and read appx. 3475 with a big block (except hemi)

I've never seen one over 4000, but I've seen enough that were in the 3800-3900 range that I'd say it is possible. Depends on options that are installed, combination of parts used, undercoating, layers of paint, so on and so forth. There is potentially a lot of variables there to alter the weight.

My 74 with a small block, 1/2 tank of gas, and driver is around 3450, which is slightly more than my 67 B body with a big block.

If you look closely at that list, you'll notice that the weights slowly increase as the years go up. If you went back further, you'd see an even bigger difference. My 67 is only 3410 with a 383. I've had a 63 426 car that was around 3250. Additional safety requirements slowly pushed the weights up. Also, as the cars became more mainstream, the public began demanding more options on them. Options add weight. Isn't the old a/c compressor and related componenets an easy 50 pounds? Door bracing is 20# per door. Add some additional fender and bumper bracing for another 10-15 pounds per end. Heavy duty suspension componenets can put on another 100 pounds over smaller lighter duty parts. Add in sound deadening and carpeted panels and you've got an extra 10 pounds. Overhead and floor consoles are another 10. Beyond published shipping weights, which are averages by the way, actual weights can also vary depending on what owners have had done to them over the decades. Undercoating and rust proofing can easily add 30-50 pounds. 3-4 layers of paint are another 25-30 pounds. Add in a gallon or two of body filler...it all adds up very quickley and suddenly your 3200# car is on the verge of 4000 pounds.

That is why attention to detail while constructing a race car can also subtract pounds at an equal rate. A small fender brace made from aluminum instead of steel, fiberglass panels, lexan, titanium, scraping off undercoating, drilling out non structual pieces. Suddenly your 3200# car is now down to 2900 and whipping out quicker and quicker e.t.s.  I believe the general rule of thumb is you knock off .5 a second for every 100 pounds of sprung weight. The gains for unsprung weight are even greater.

Which is exactly why Wilwoods are so light and so many wheel manufacturers make very light and expensive sets of wheels.

Honestly, for as much steel is in these cars, I'm surprised they don't weigh more than they do. The new SRT8 Chargers are about 4200lbs. :poopoke:

A coworker has an all black SRT8 Charger. He seems to love Mopars (drove a Jeep before), saw my Cuda shirt and told me about his family member that stupidly sold a nice 72 for song and a dance. I can't wait to show him my black 71 when it's done. :clapping:

Im hoping my car weighs no more than 3500lbs (without driver..........)

new floor pans / no undercoating / no AC
aluminum heads / water pump & housing / alum. radiator / intake / wheels
headers lighter than manifolds???

Engine size also plays a big part. When I raced my first 67 GTX I weigh in at 3835 lbs. Thats showroom stock 440 auto console floor mat's and 1/2 tank of gas.  I blew that up and put a 383 in it with hooker headers and no exhaust system but everything else still in the car and it weighed 3535 lbs on the same scale.

I guess mopars claim of 3475 with 440 could be the "shipping weight" ???
