Standard steering wheel removal
« on: October 26, 2007 - 07:01:04 AM »
Got my rimblow yesterday from plumbeeper, planning to install it this weekend.
What is involved in removing the old standards wheel from my 70 cuda?
Thought if there are any tricks or tips I would ask you experts.  Same goes for installing the rimblow, any tips?

Thanks

No tricks to it, but you do need a puller to get the old one off.

   :iagree:

You will definitely need a puller if your crush-can was never removed before.

I know nothing about rim blows specifically but my steering wheel is held to the crush can by three small bolts,(very easy removal/installation) so unless the crush can has to be replaced I see no reason to pull it..?!?!?

:iagree: I replaced my wheel in my Challenger with a Tuff Wheel, and all I had to do was undo the 3 nuts and pop the new one on.  No puller needed.

First you will have to remove the 3 phillips head screws from the back of the standard steering wheel so the spoke cover will come off. Then pull off the horn pad, it just snaps on so just grab ahold of it and pull straight out. Unplug the horn wire from the horn contact on the center of the wheel. Remove the 3 nuts that hold the steering wheel to the crush can. You will not need to remove the crush can unless it has issues and needs replacing. Plug the horn wire onto the rimblow then install the rimblow onto the crush can with the 3 nuts removed from your standard wheel. Be sure to install them with the tapered end of the nuts touching the wheel, not facing you. Snap on the cap and you're done.

Don't forget to take some pics and post them after you install it. :picture:

More help needed...

Got the old wheel off, no problem.  Put the new one on but it isn't straight....  :villagers:

So..
1. Can I take off the crush can and put it back on turning it to get the wheel straight?
2. If so, where can I get a steering wheel puller long enough to go down in there?  I went to ORileys, Autozone, Advance and all the ones they have are very short and wouldn't reach down in through the crush can to the nut and threaded holes.

I want to get the wheel straight when I put it on.  Not sure if I'm on the right track to fixing that or not.  Your help is much appreciated.

Thanks

I'm not positive if it's the same issue but I had to go to an alignment shop to get my Tuff Wheel centered after I put it on.  It wasn't a big deal because I needed an alignment also, which could have been the issue.

Your rimblow should be straight as the standard wheel you just removed. Was the standard wheel misaligned before changing?
You cannot straighten a steering wheel by realigning the crush can because the splined shaft has one of the splines uncut to assist in correct alignment everytime. It will only go on one way. Your car needs to be realigned. One of the tie rods in screwed out farther than the other. Install your wheel and take it to an alignment shop and tell him the problem, he should be able to align the car so the wheel is straight.

My old wheel must have not been straight either.  Since it was a 3 spoke I think someone aligned it with the wrong spoke in the down position making it 120 degrees off.

I'll put the new wheel on and take it to an alignment shop

Thanks for all the help gang!

Do you mean 180 degrees off? If so, then your problem is easier to fix than an alignment. In the engine compartment there is a coupler in the steering shaft that has been put together wrong. Disassemble it, turn your steering wheel 180 degrees and reassemble to fix your problem. While you have it apart, it might be a good idea to put a rebuild kit in it. They're available for about $15.

It's not a full 180 degrees off.  I'll take it to alignment shop and see what they say.
Here are a few pics of it installed.

Thanks

If that picture shows how far off center the wheel is, then the alignment should take care of it.  that's pretty much what mine looked like.

It's off more that that.  I turned the wheels some for the pic.
