Valve Sticking?
« on: November 03, 2007 - 02:04:13 PM »
think I have a valve sticking on my 400. The engine sounds like there is air being compressed and it backfires. When I remove the spark plug wire from that cylinder it quiets down. Could I have a valve sticking and is there an easy way to help solve this. The cylinder is the second one from the front on the passenger side.

Take the valve cover off and hit the top of the valves with a rubber mallet . Then recheck it...if so you need to pull the head and have it look at but most of the time valves stick only when hot, very hot.

Could be leaking, again the head needs to come off then.

Good luck

Hold on...I don't follow you with...The engine sounds like there is air being compressed and it backfires----if it just backfiring it could be timing, lean air fuel, even a small hole in your headers or a leaking exhaust gasket.

When you turn the motor over with a breaker bar you can hear the air leaking past the rings, thats normal. Once its running theres not enough time for much air to leak.

the valve could be burnt or recessed into the head with the use of unleaded fuel
I would start with a compression test , dry & wet , I bet you will have to pull the head but you can measure the tips of the valve to see if it is higher or lower then the rest

While the engine is running I hear puff puff puff... when I remove the wire it quiets down.
