California Lic.Plates...Can they be traced?
« on: January 19, 2002 - 11:08:49 PM »
I still have the original California plates that came with my 70 Dodge Challenger RT/SE. Could a person call there Highway Dept. and have these plates run or will it take an act of Congress to do this? I just would like to talk to the last owner of this car and plates to find out if they ever found or looked for a buildsheet. The guy that I purchased the car from brought it back from California, had it titled but never put the new plates on it. He then lost interest and sold the car to me. He said he cant remember the name of the guy he bought it from,oh well. I bought it with the original California plates on it

I don't know how it is in Cal, but up here you can pay a $5 fee at the DMV and recieve copies of all paperwork for the car since the day it arrived in the state! 8)
I did that for my R/T and have the paperwork from the day it was sent from WA to Anchorage 5th Ave Dodge to sell as a new car! 8) 8)
Hope you can do that, too! :)

CAPTIAN_MOPAR IS CORRECT- GOT EVERYTHING FROM N.C. DMV FOR THE DEPUTY- FROM THE DAY IT LEFT THE DEALERSHIP- ALL THE LEINS, A REPOSSESSION, ALL THE OWNERS.  A BIG ENVELOPE CAME UP- $5.00 US- GREAT INFO.

IN ONT, ALL THE RECORDS ONLY GO BACK ABOUT 10 YEARS OR 3 OWNERS.

I CAN'T FIND OUT ANYTHING ABOUT MY 67 CHARGER AS IT IS A ORIGNAL ONT. CAR-- :'(

I FOUND ON THE NET THE WED SITE FOR N.C DMV, FOUND THE RECORDS SITE AND LEFT A EMAIL TO THE PERSON WHO WOULD HELP ME- NEXT DAY I GOT A REPLY-  IT HELPS IF YOU CAN SEND A PIC OF YOUR OWNERSHIP OF YOUR CAR SO THEY CAN VAILADATE IT AS BEING YOURS.

HOPE THIS HELPS
JOHN

That's the beauty of having this site.  You have a bunch of people putting their heads together giving opinions and experiences. Just weigh them out and do what's best for you! 8)
CudaGuy, just keep on adding your 2 cents! ;)

Kenestra, I ran the plate through the computer last night, but it came up Not On File. :-[ Apparently it's been a few years since that plate was last registered. If you want, I can run the VIN, but chances are it will also come back Not On File. Capt. Mopar's suggestion of having the state DMV look up the registration history of the car is probably your best bet. I don't know about California, but you can get that done here in New Mexico also. Like I said though, I'll try the VIN if you want, the price is right, free! :)
