Finding Number 1 On Distributor?
« on: November 23, 2007 - 11:53:41 AM »
How do I find out where my number 1 wire goes on my distributor. The engine is a 73 400. I changed the distributor cap and forgot where it goes there are no markings as to where it goes on the new cap or the old.

Pull your number one plug and bump the engine over with your finger covering the hole. When it pushes your finger off, this will show you where #1 is for the location, then look at your balancer timing marks, you cand move the crank back a little to get it even closer if you went too far :2thumbs:

Are you sure? Mine was set up with 4 where the 7 is so I guess it was 180 off and it ran. I was told in a reply on another forum that 1 was directly to the left of the hold down clip on the front which made sense to me since I know about where 4 was.

If the distributor has been of the engine, at anytime, # 1 could be anywhere...

Do like Moparal told you...

When installing a distributor you can put #1 anywhere you like by changing the position of the distributor drive gear.  Thus, we can't tell you how this was done by whoever built your engine.  There is a "std" position which I believe requires the horizontal slot in the distributor drive gear to be perpendicular to the engine centerline when the engine is at TDC on cylinder #1.  If you don't want to change the distributor drive gear orientation, just follow Moparal's instructions.  The rotor will be pointing to the #1 wire. Hope this helps.

ps If you are out 180 degrees pull the distributor up and rotate the distributor shaft 180 and reinstall.
