A good 10 inch with a 35 to 3800 flash will satisfy your need to launch. In 1966 there was a different spline input shaft and maybe 67, but the standard for non lock up is 68 to around 76 yr model I believe. Run a tranny cooler and I say anything under 3500 takes bottom end tq to launch hard. Single plane intakes work good from around 3k to 6.5k  I myself would like a bit steeper gear for the street like a 391,410 or even a 430 for the 383 cube.

Chryco will surely add an abundance of his knowledge to your post , once he sees it. :2thumbs:

I agree with a good 10 inch converter (that gives about a 3500 stall) and at least 3:91 gears. Went with that on my Cuda and its great for the street.  I use a B&M stacked plate super cooler for the tranny (about 12 in  X 12 in X 1.5 in) that you can get for under $100, and mount it in front of the aluminum radiator.
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"
