has anyone made a console auto look like a pistol grip manual?
« on: December 16, 2007 - 07:38:27 AM »
I have a console auto set up but love the look of the no-console pistol grip manual set up with the boot.  With the aftermarket pistol grips for autos, is it possible to say build a sheet-metal cover for the linkages, carpet over the top, add a pistol grip and boot and hey presto????  Anyone tried this - pics would be great if you have.

Up until now, I have only seen the non-console thing work with a 4-speed shifter, not an automatic. I doubt anyone has done this conversion, but I await any proof.  :grinyes:

Probably not w/a OEM slap stick shifter due to the rods in which the console hides.

You'll want an aftermarket shifter and maybe somehow get it to work w/a boot:

I had often thought about adapting a Pistol grip handle to one of these--

It would probably be cleaner.

I was wondering whether you could use a 4-speed adaptor hump (would it cover all the linkages??) and then add a pistol grip (like the Shift-r-arm) with boot etc.  Would depend on everything lining up and how much money I wanted to spend to find out that it doesnt.

Hi Mark,
I have thought about this conversion many times myself.  What i figured out was you would have to relocate the hole for the vertical pivot rod as close to the shifter as possabile so as to hide it under the leather boot of the shifter, this would require shortening the upper rods from the shifter and adjusting the underside rods to the required length .
OR
You may be able to make a kind of Z shaped rod go straight from the shifter through a hole linked to the gearbox selector.   I will have to have a better look at my brothers car and shifter to see if such a conversion will acctually work.
