New Hemi's (5.7, 6.1) in old Mopars - How do they sound?
« on: December 20, 2007 - 11:06:03 AM »
I've read with interest people putting in the new 5.7 or 6.1 Hemi's into their older cars.  I am trying to find videos of these cars so I can hear what the new Hemi's conversion projects sound like once completed.  I have found video of these engines in the new Chargers etc. but not in an older Mopar.

Anyone here who has done this install have videos of the car running?  How do they sound?

Thanks in advance

I would also like to hear how they sound with a good exhaust system on a Cuda or Challenger.

I hoping to install a 6.1 in my Challenger this year and I plan on running the Corsa exhaust system from the SRT8's and modify it to use the stock Challenger tips. I have heard that exhaust on the cars in person and it sounds mean.

Hopefully this spring I'll have mine done in my truck.  It will have true duals, without cats.  My truck is a '67, exempt from emissions.  Granted, my truck isnt an ebody, but should sound pretty much the same, still a 5.7.  I cant wait!   :jumping:

Won't they sound like they do in any other car with the same diameter exhaust system?  :clueless: The engine is the one that makes the noise, the exhaust may differ the sound somewhat but bugger all, if any.  :dunno: Mum & Dad's SRT8 is sexy as, very mechanical, I'm guessing it's the "Hemi" sound people speak of. Like a low muffled double pedal kick drum getting faster and faster as you push the go pedal. I love the sound of Dad's and his only has a CAI.

Click this link and then type in XV motorsports in the search box, watch the video that comes up:

The orange XV Motorsports challenger has a 5.7 Hemi rated at 440 HP.  At the end you can hear it roar.  :ylsuper:

I recently installed a 6.1L hemi in the wife's '71 Cuda.
It basically sounds like a Ram 2500 with a 5.7 Hemi and an exhaust albeit a bit louder since it goes through long tube TTi headers and no cat converters.

The engine it replaced, a 360Magnum 395HP crate engine, sounded nastier but not to the wife's liking as far as ease of driveability, no a/c, blah blah blah.

So now she has something closer to 450hp, smoothe idle, a/c, 130amp generator (whick will power a nice sound system and power windows) and teh ability to just jump in, turn the key and immediately hit the a/c button   :bananasmi

Isn't that the car that you posted on I believe Moparts about the engine swap?

My dad's 6.4l with 3" magnaflow sounds like a stinkin exotic muscle car when revved, quite unique actually.  :grinyes:

I'm sure these newer hemi engine perform great, but I bet it is also very "weird" to hear the different rumbling tones coming out of some '60's or '70's muscle car. They are or should be, more efficient with gas comsumption as well.

I also can't think of this topic without thinking of MoparMan (Bob) who was installing a 5.7 into his '68 Dart . When meeting and talking to him at Carlisle this past summer he told me the car was at the body shop getting the final touchup and paint when the shop burnt down. But the engine was still at his home garage just waiting to be installed. All his work and all the modifications for intall, and now it just sits there. Sad sad indeed.

I bet it is also very "weird" to hear the different rumbling tones...

...when sitting next to a Toyota truck or an Audi A8. That is what is really freaky. You expect a muscle car to rumble, but hearing a Japanese truck and a German luxury car bark away from a light with the same rumble as your Challenger gives you weird feeling.

Yes it is

Currently not running since I decided to tear out the complete dash and a/c case to do a major overhaul. Should be back on the road very shortly.
