What do you call ...
« on: December 29, 2007 - 03:39:05 PM »
... the sheet metal nuts that go on the bottoms of the fenders and quarters and to which the bolts fastening the valences attach? I had always heard them called "stamped steel nuts," but two NAPA stores today told me that they'd never heard that term.  When I described what I was looking for they said "Oh, speed nuts," but speed nuts are a different thing.  They're one layer of sheet steel only, and they don't cli[p over the mounting hole.

They are also known as speed nuts and panel nuts.

NAPA carries generic replacements in several sizes.

I've heard them called speed nuts before.  I first came across them trying to install speakers in the rear side panels of my '83 Plymouth Colt GTS (yes, this was in '83).  The screws weren't holding in the plastic, so the guy at Ace Hardware gave me what he called speed nuts (the U-shaped ones) to go around the plastic.  They worked like a charm.

Mike

What I've seen called speed nuts were flat pieces that did not clip over the mounting hole.

There is more than one style of nut called a speed nut, it is a generic term. The ones for plywood (Barracuda fast back rear compartment doors) are also called speed nuts. Probably other names as well.  ;)

HK,

Here is a link to a great manual illustrating the fasteners for an e body for $75. When the page opens, click on the upper right link.

www.moparrmotorconsulting.com

It really helps to remove the quess work in identifing the right type of bolts and nuts.

Hope that helps.

Bullitt-

Thanks for the offer. I think that as long as I know what to call them I can find them, but if it turns out that I'm wrong I'll be in touch.

Slotts -

Thanks for the link.
