Can we figure build date from VIN #
« on: January 15, 2008 - 10:13:09 AM »
HI. I have a 1971 R/T with VIN 4353xx which was built in June 71. Is it possible to estimate when was my convertible built when it has VIN 2783xx? Anyone with a close number to this and knows his build date :bigsmile:
Thanks

Hi Farouk,

On your fender tag you will have a set of letters & numbers along the second row from the bottom of the tag.  Can you post all these numbers and i will tell you when it was built buddy. :thumbsup:
1970 Barracuda   (O^--^===|===^--^O)
1971 Barracuda   (O O {]{]{]|[}[}[} O O)

Hi Farouk,

Like Ken mentioned, it's on the fender tag.  See this link: http://www.maxwedge.com/documentation/documenting.html

"721" is the schedualed build date="Birthday"

If you don't have the fender tag, then the last 6 numbers are the "sequence #", which shows the the number of cars made that model year at the particular assembly plants, meaning all cars, not just Challengers.  Keep in mind that Challengers were made at at least 2 assembly plants, Hamtramck and LA I think?  :dunno:  Soooooo....you need to know total production made I would guess made at that plant and maybe take a stab at the place where you car fell in line?  :clueless:

I think someone else may have a better idea than I...  :bricks1:

Thank you guys for the input, and Super Blue 72 good to hear from you again!
I know about translating the various numbers on the fended tag, but unfortunately the Convertible has nothing other than the VIN # that is on the dash Pad. The previous owner did a paint job on it and never put back the fender tag, and he passed away and his children know nothing about it!
That is why my best bet is to locate someone with a close number to mine for a wild guess??
Cheers.

all 71-74 ebodies were built at Hamtramck

How about looking at the Challenger Registry and try to get a # close to yours?  It might be a little foot work but at least you have some VINS to play with.

http://www.challenger-registry.com/

The end of the model year is in July of that model year so you '71 R/T is close to the end.  Consequesntly, the beginning is in August of the previous year, so that would mean Aug. of '70, sooooo....wild guess is that the convertible is a bit more than halfway?  Like in March of 1971?  VERY WILD GUESS!!!!

BTW, thanks for the info Ted!  :thumbsup:

Here's what I dug up....

JS23N1B2745xx=1971 01 22

JH23G1B3312xx=1971 - MARCH - 1?

JH23G1B2728xx=1971 - JAN - ??

Oh, oh, found this one that messes up the order: JS23N1B2341xx=1971 - MAR - 04

Soooo....with that process of GUESTIMATION, I make another stab at end January/early Febuary of 1971??? Wild guess... :dunno:

FYI= Your convertible was made between Pace car convertible #1 and 2, not close in VIN though, just between, JH27N1B266664 and JH27G1B284355 respectively.

Hey buddy, thanks for all the hard work and sorry it took me so long to respond.
I went through the registry and saw nothing new other than what you indicated. So you are right, late Jan - early Feb. Thanks a lot.
On some of the confusing dates/numbers, there has to be a mistake somewhere along the line, so I will ignore such confusion :clueless:

The date on the fender tag is the "SCHEDULED production date" not when the car was built. If something happened to hold the order after being scheduled, parts shortages, mistake, car pulled off line for a problem, etc. then the car might be off by days or even weeks from it's scheduled date of production. .
