hood hinge interchange?
« on: December 31, 2007 - 02:54:06 PM »
Is a 70 chally hood hinge  the same as a 73 Barracuda?     I need to recondition my 70s, but I also have a 73 Plymouth set.   I was hoping I could just recondition the 73s and swap them onto the 70.

thanks

Yes, all E body hinges will swap with other E bodies, however, they wil not interchange with any other body styles.

I thought 70 hinges were different than the later years.  :dunno: I'm not saying they won't swap, but I didn't think all E-Body hinges were the same for all years.

Actually there were three different styles of hinges.  You can go to the SMS Restorations web site where they show them, though I agree, I think you can interchange them.

Thanks for the link. I'll be darn if I can tell the diff. between them by looking!  changes must be minor.  I guess I'll have to pick up my 70s and redo them before painting.

Springs might be different, got an ebay set of hinges & went to use one, after alignment problems I had the springs off, layed them next to each other & the ebay set was thicker by a tad & had two more coils, now they were sold as ebody(but that's not set in stone) I assumed they were challenger because of the longer hood? I went to a local guy by we to get a different set of springs and had a hard time matching what I had to the other e body ones he had, and he had quite a few.  I think they just used what ever supplier was available.

Side note - Don't get your springs chemically dipped.  I did and since part of the process is to bake then in an oven, they runined them.  Won't even hold the hood up now.

the way they stamp the steel is different.  just a little difference in the shape is all there is but for someone that knows then they can tell that they have been changed.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

I saw a trick somewhere on how to paint the springs they used a old bumper jack to stretch open the spring so they could paint it.It sounded good to me.

Painting hood springs, a piece of 2x4 and two nuts & bolts, can't get no cheaper than that....
