Weep holes
« on: December 31, 2007 - 04:46:11 AM »
I've taken apart the area around the rear side windows, and it's pretty obvious that rainwater will drip down the inside of the quarter around the edges of the window seal. My question is what happens to that water. There aren't any "weep" holes at the bottom of the quarter to let the water out. I suspect that is why so many cars have that area rusted out. It's also a fine area for dirt to collect (I pulled handfuls of dirt out), and when dirt gets wet it's a fine way to rust out any adjacent metal.

Does anyone drill holes there?

There are some diagonal bumps along the bottom of the rocker panel that act as the drains.

It sounds like your drain holes might be clogged with dirt.  :dunno:

The clogging of the holes is what causes these to rust out.  Not many people will clean the out.  So dirt and other things will clog them up.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

That not a good place for rust either (not that any place is) on uni body. Mine started to tear after a doing few burnouts that's how I noticed the problem. Took it to my body shop and the owner said this area is a common problem with our cars. He fabed these drainage holes into the patch panel to help alleviate the problem in the future.

I see two diagonal holes under the door area, but they are way too far forward to drain the area under the rear side windows. Looks like I'm going to break out the electric drill. My car could benefit from a complete teardown and rotisserie job, but I'm just not up for that. There's minor rust here and there, but no rust throughs. I'm just doing stabilizing actions by wire wheeling what I can off then POR15'ing it, keeping it always garaged, and never driving in the rain.

Right now, I just wanna get this beast on the road so I can burn rubber and annoy my neighbors.

with all the reproduced sheetmetal being made, you would think rocker panels would bring a high demand to be reproduced. they all rust out behind the quarter panel in this area. i sure could use some good rustfree or new rocker panels for a few cars that me and my buddy have.

I did this same thing to both my cars. If you run water over them now it comes out like a waterfall.
