Whats the oil capacity of the 340 oil pan?
« on: January 03, 2008 - 01:21:49 PM »
Just wondering because I'm seeing some different numbers from different places.
I also haven't gotten around to getting a service manual yet.

Sorry for the dumb questions just don't want to screw the car up.

Thanks guys :)

I have always used 5 quarts in my '73 340.  But I will look it up in the assorted manuals that I have here and will repost what it says later.   :working:

I think it is 5 quarts also.

If you would check that manuals for me that would be great.

I can confirm that my 340 takes 5 quarts.

If in doubt, put in 4 then check the dip stick.

The pan holds about 4 1/2 quarts, a 1/2 quart the oil filter holds.

What I did was change the oil with a new oil filter  give the motor the full 5 quarts and then if the oil is not at the full mark, scribe your own line on the dip stick and use that for knowing if its full. Sometimes the dip stick tube can be knock down too far, its best to scribe your own full line when you know theres 5 quarts in it--including the oil filter.

Read the chart then read the foot note at the bottom of the chart.  Five quarts with a filter change. This was scanned from my 1973 owners manual.
