small block oil filter base question
« on: January 05, 2008 - 12:51:43 PM »
Just got my 360 rebuilt and broken in, but I have a small oil leak. I found the oil pressure gauge line was seeping and a new ferule fixed that, but I am still getting some oil on the headers and it looks like its coming from the oil filter. I just screwed it off and wanted to make sure I have the filter base on correctly. It is sticking out in the middle now (convex) and I was not sure when we  assembled the motor which was was correct. A picture would be great too.

Thanks, George

there needs to be a gasket between the oil filter base & the block

We installed one gasket but I keep hearing that there s/b two, one smaller one that we installed and the larger one that goes on between the block and base which evidently we didnt as I found one in the gasket set that appears to be the one, but getting that bolt off is a pain.Could someone verify that it is 15/16 and does screw in the normal clockwise rotation to tighten. I'm having trouble getting the 12 pt socket I have on it, hope to find a wrench or a 6 point 15/16 tomorrow.

Thanks.......George

I don't remember the bolt size but it does screw in normally. If the adapter plate is the one that came off the motor just installing a new gasket and bolting it up will cause it to leak as the plate bends when installed. The plate needs to be offset so that the outer ring of the plate at the gasket meets the block while there is about 1/4" or so of space at the inner gasket so that the outer ring will compress the gasket and seal. Doesn't heart to use some sealer also.

I just discovered that it is apparently a 1" bolt, not 15/16. Hope to get it off tomorrow AM and install the large gasket that goes around the outside. I believe we only installed the smaller one originally.

I did have the outer gasket on, but no inner one. There was not one in the felpro set. Ideas on where to get one?

Thanks, George

Dealer is always a last resort.     Being as it is only a gasket, it can't cost too much, even from a dealer.   :2thumbs:

I always put a little more "bow" in the plate with a press before reinstalling. They do tend to flatten out over the years of being compressed.

Small gasket location? Re: small block oil filter base question

My kit came with 2 small gaskets that will fit the center bolt that holds the plate an filter, one thick and one thin. I assume that I should use the thicker one and that it s/b placed between the BLOCK and the PLATE, not the Plate and the bolt. I will make sure my plate is not bent in and will try to get just a little bow toward the outside before I tighten it down.
