5-6speed manuel transmission
« on: December 26, 2007 - 12:30:03 AM »
Currently I have a A833 four speed manuel with no overdrive in my car.  With the rebuild on the motor and the change from 3.23 to 3.55 rear end I constantly feel that I need extra tranny gears.  If one was considering converting from 4 speed to a 5 or 6 manuel unit what would you use and what does a conversion like this cost?

typically $4000 range could be slightly cheaper as your car is already a 4 spd
I have had problems with Keisler in the past & don`t recommend them
I don`t have a recommendation for you really

Go with a Tremec transmission. Keisler are just a conversion store with conversion parts they don't make the transmissions. You can buy the trusty Tremec transmission from all kids of places. I've had 2 and driven 3 or 4 before "enthusiastically" and they're a fantastic transmission. The 6-Speed (T56) might be a tad overkill for you I feel, 3.55's aren't too bad so I'd stick with a 5-speed if making the jump.

Tremec are a well known, beautiful to drive and a tough unit for street driven cars. :2cents:

I've got a Richmond 6-speed in mine.  $4000 is about right.  Lots of little gotcha's involved with mine.  Tranny hump needed to be replaced (long story, but think aluminum cans).  The driveshaft had to be shortened and the crossmember I bought had to be massaged into fitting.

From doing the conversion on a couple of GM products I think the 6 speed is too much. The problem on the chevelle we did the 6th gear was to high and the rpms were too low at cruise speed for a carb. It would have been better with EFI or a low geared rear end. I have a 833OD and it is the cheapest way to go. I have 3.54 rear and run about 2100-2200 rpm at 65mph.

Has anyone done the Tremec TKO 600 5-speed swap with the standard (Ford) transmission without going to one of the aftermarket modified tranny kits. I guess what I'm asking is where does the shifter end up at and does the stock TKO require modification to the cross member since the kits modify the tailhousing for clearance ? I assume the console would not work without a modified shifter/tranny.

Thanks

exactly the it is a top loader tranny so the shifter will not come through anywhere near the rigth place , the mods seem to be the down fall fo rthe trans , Darcys tranny leaks , he has dropped the trans to fix it at least once & it is no better & I have talked to other people that cannot get satifaction with that trans

I have to comment on the standard Ford Tremec.  The part number for the TKO-600 is the 5008 with a across the board price of $1975.00.  The modifications that the transmission needs / requires is to get under the torsion bar support / floor board cross member.  A you all know, this tranmission is an internal rail shifted unit.  The modifications required to relocate the shifter to penetrate the floor board in the factory position is to machine the tail housing and basically remove the 2nd and 3rd mounting positions for the stock shifter location on the Tremec, machine a new shifter rail to exit the rear of the tail housing, develop a "linkage" to offset the shifter and bracket to retain it.  As you can see the modifications are many, not difficult by any means, but usually more than the average person is willing to attempt.

This TKO tranmission is the best upgrade you can do, regardless of who you get the transmission from.  Each company uses the same transmission, but the differences start from there.

I run a TKO-600 behind a stroked 340 with 3.55's (70 mph at 2200 rpm).
