Power Steering..Tightening the slop
« on: January 06, 2008 - 09:55:19 AM »
Hey guys....I am used to tightening the steering on manual steer by ..loosen the lock nut and turn the center screw with the screwdriver and resnug the nut.   How is this accomplished with power steering?  My steering feels like it needs a little something....Thanks, David :clueless:

Adjusted the same way, but as I'm turning the screw, I use my hand to turn the steering coupler back and forth, after pointing the wheels straight ahead. If you go too far the steering sometimes doesn't return to center while driving.  I got a rebuilt box at AutoZone for about $125 years ago.  They also carry a lifetime guarantee to replace it or refund it.

:iagree:  Just make sure it is straight ahead and then adjust.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

David, first make sure that your box is tight.  I was going through the same thing.  I swapped a firm feel box from a 78 cop car and was having some slop and thought I needed to rebuild the rag joint (you might check that too, its cheap).  It turned out that the bolts holding the box to the frame weren't torqued enough and was allowing it to wiggle just a little when I turned the wheel.

Go ahead and tighten the allen headed set screw some with the engine off.  You will know when you've gone too far, then back off until it turns smooth.  Definately don't leave it too tight if you go to far for any length of time though, it will cause severe internal wear.
