I didn't replace it because:
1) one member here mentioned it would make it difficult for the pump to 'suck'
2) there's a filter built in to the bottom of the pump, so it's probably overkill to add another
For your case, I'd stick to the manufacturer's instructions. Electric fuel pumps seem to be a lot more sensitive to dirt than the old mechanical ones.
