MSD Digital 6 Box

Anyone run one of these on the street... are they okay on the street with no problems.......

Yes, its the 7 digital boxes that will burn up.

I like the 7al boxes but was told that the digital 6 box puts out a stronger spark than the non digital 7 box.

Now the digital 6 box is street legal in all 50 states, where the 7 box is not, so how the digital 6 box which claims to have a stronger spark than the 7 box, is street legal but the 7 box is not, I have no idea.

All those boxes are light years ahead of the little Mopar firewall units.

I don't think the spark is stronger.. :clueless:

But you get a lot of extra options on the 6 digital..
When summer comes, I can tell you if it's better,  - I'm into changin from 7 AL to 6 digital rigth now..

The digital 6 over the 6a or 6al will keep the multispark up throughout, where the analog boxes will drop off.Since digital pulsewidth triggering is much faster.

If you look here, I'd actually run a Pertronix, then a Summit, over a MSD Dig6.

All have rev limiters, both the summit and msd put out 135mj where the Pertronix is 250mj (rating for spark intensity and generally 'the more the better'). however perttronix claims 2 sparks per cylinder, msd is usually 3-4..my opinion is the added mj of the pertronix would overcome that difference. just my  :2cents:

I have used the digital 6 in other cars, what ever you do, dont weld on the car without unplugging it. I cooked a couple of them that way.

Piggybacking on your post... anyone run a Mallory Hyfire unit?  Built in rev-limiter, no chips, less expensive...  Opinions?

I've run MSD Digital 6, Jacobs Pro Street, and a stock mopar with chrome box in one of my drag cars and in one of my street cars. I can't say there was any appreciable difference in e.t., miles per hour, miles per gallon, cold start ability, or driveability between the three. Application was a naturally aspirated small block @ 11.5:1 squeeze running to 7000 rpm.

The mopar unit was nice because it was so basic yet worked great. Jacobs was neat because it was freaking huge and everyone just looked at it and scratched their heads wondering what it was. The MSD was nice because it had so much adjustability in it for rev limits and ignition retard.

Problem wise I never had any issues with the chrome box set up. I never had any issues with the Jacobs unit. The MSD, on the other hand, eventually had rev limit functions freak out in it. Set it to 7000 and it would only rev to 4000. Set it to 9000 and it would rev to 6000. Ihad to bypass the rev limiter completely to get it to work decent at upper rpm. I eventually pulled it out and it is still sitting in my garage. I suppose I could send it back to MSD and have them take a look at  itt.

A few of hte guys I hang out with really like the Crane stuff as a good value, good spark, good options set up. Summit house brand stuff also has some impressive specs and pricing and I would probably buy either one of those ahead of an MSD again. I still ikethe Jacobs set up and with the addition of their nitrous controller, youd have a pretty complete set up.

/Im inquiring cause i like the ignition retard and nitrous contoller to drop the timing back when I hit the switch plus built in two step...  :working:

I have seen on many sites people claiming to have all sorts of problems with the digital  boxes.

If you are running a  MSD  6a or 7al you can add on a timing computer that has a timing retard built in.

You can even wire the nitrous switch and the timing retard wire together or you can get a rpm switch and retard the timing after a certain rpm, say 4000.

I have a 6al but I was also thinking of getting the timing controller as well to drop back the timing if I plan to spray it... maybe that is the better route...

any opinions.....

You should have some sort of timing control given the nitrous. Should pull back timing 2* for every 50hp shot of Nitrous.

Vert - I have just bought a Hyfire 6AL and E-Coil from Mallory. That is a digital box and yes it has the built in rev limiter and I set it for 6750  :bigsmile: . I have backordered the 9000 series distributor. So when this all gets here (3 weeks) I should be ready to fire 'er up. Will do a complete report then. The reason I went with all Mallory is compatibility. The harnesses are all there to just plug it all together and connect the tach, 12V and ignition source. Costs in CDN$ were $312 dist, $180 6AL box and $64 E-Coil.

I had a Digital 6 box on the 440 Duster I drag raced. It worked great!
