Rim blow question
« on: January 24, 2008 - 03:27:22 PM »
I think Plumbeeper is a member here? But maybe someone can answer this question? On the steel center,is it steel dipped in copper and then the top finish over that? The reason I ask is that I want to do a different finish to it.And this wheel would cost a fortune to bring back to stock.

The rimblow, tuff wheels, 68-70 B-body steering wheels, 72-74 E-body steering wheels were all done pretty much the same. They are a stamped steel, then plated in copper, dull nickel, then chrome. Once the chrome finish has been damaged, there is no way to save it without a complete refinish. There are some that are replating in chrome but they're still not quite right. I have been through several plating companies and only one of them has produced an acceptable finish, but turn around is horrible.
If you're planning on painting, be sure to remove all of the old chrome, nickel and copper, then use professional paint and body materials and you should get nice results. I've used a nice automotive finish that is undetectible at 3 feet, but it is a paint, not chrome so you have to treat it as you would your car's paint job.
Good luck with your project, and if there's anything you need, feel free to contact me.
Dave

The IROC is green, auto, V-6 and when I bought it in October 2006 it had 500 miles on it. Now it has about 11,000 miles on it. The original owner worked for Chrysler and bought it when he retired. Stored it in his garage I guess hoping it would be worth a lot some day. Unfortunately for him, divorce courts let his wife have it and she didn't want it so she decided to sell it. I found it in the Indiana weekly free car trader mag and jumped on it. How often can you buy a brand new car for less than half of what it sold new? This car had nothing changed on it since it left the assembly line. When you open the door, it still has that new car smell. The oil and filter was still original as well. I just couldn't pass it up since the R/T was starting to show some wear.
The IROC R/T is black, 5-speed, 2.2 DOHC Turbo stage 3, power everything, lumbar seats. Bought it from original owner in 1996 with 10,000 miles on it. Now it has about 120,000 and still runs great. It has a few little things pop up every now and then but it still gets me where I'm going. This is the 2nd R/T we've owned. The 1st one we bought new in 93 and rolled it 6 months later with 10,000 miles on it. We've had several Shelby chargers over the years and loved every one of them. Fast little cars right off the lot.

A friend of mine has a beautiful Black Iroc R/T,Maybe he'll chime in?I got to drive a red one this summer and that initial boost from the turbo is a real kick.I think I have heard that those cars were the most power to weight of any car that mopar built. :burnout:
