Calling all Audiofiles - In need of expertise
« on: January 31, 2008 - 02:19:36 PM »
Hey guys need some advice.

I am in the process of designing my car audio and want some advice. I want to use the Alpine IVA - W205 head unit http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/products/product.php?model=IVA-W205 but want to know what speakers you suggest. I will have 3.5" in the dash and could put (what size) in the door panels ( I know that this is not a popular decision with many but don't forget my car is a restomod) and 6x9's in the rear? I am not a hugh fan of all the base, I usually listen to classic Rock and Country. Can you recommend a good setup?

Do you have a 3 speaker dash? If so, useing aftermarket speakers on the outside will probably require some hacking of the dash frame to get the magnets in there. There are some great 6X9's out there that you can throw in the package tray. I can't even remember what I bought, but they are 4-ways that take 100 Watts without a problem. I have an amp in my trunk.  :naughty: I really hate to see you put speakers in your door panels. Maybe the kick panels would be an option?

Thanks Mike,
Yes I have a 3 speaker dash and have already cut the frame. I currently have 3.5" Boston Acoustics. Not sure if the kick panels will be an option or not. i recall seeing Goodys car but I had to do some modification to the drivers side kick panel for the remote wiper motor. Why do people dislike the door option as that is what all modern cars have??

I got them in mine because the door panels were cut when I got it.  Sounds good though.  You have to be careful of the thickness of the speaker to clear the window crank. :2cents:

My door panels will be covered in leather so I guess I could flare the door panel out with fiberglass and buy a little room. Do you know how thick the speaker can be??

You seem to have a head unit picked out and the speakers are a personal choice thing once you decide what size you will go with. If you want good sound I would suggest getting a component set no matter what size or brand, you will be able to tell a big difference if you do much listening. Even though you say you dont like bass I wouls still recommend getting a small sub and sub amp. You will be amazed at how much better the music will sound when you fill in the low frequency with a sub. It does not have to be a thumper, just an accent to your music. I am going to use a 3 way JL component set in my car. Unless you are going to do a surround sound system I dont think I would even utilize the center speaker. There are a lot of quality speaker makers out there and it would be a good idea to listen to different systems and speakers in the car to get a good idea as to what you like. Sound boards are not a good way to pick speakers because they all sound different in a car.

That is pretty much what I am going to do in my car. I will make fiberglass pods that will bolt to the metal panel of the door and then cover it with white vinyl to match the white door panels. I will have 3 seperate speakers in the pod, a 6.5", 4" and tweets all with seperate chambers. I am not worried about altering my door panels, to me music is that important.
