Help with getting W5A580/NAG1/722.6/Autostick transmission running
« on: February 03, 2008 - 01:57:38 PM »
My name is Sean Sutherland and I am stationed in Germany with the Air Force.  I am finally heading back to the United States after being overseas for the last 7 ½ years.  My 73 challenger is currently in Illinois being “restomodified” by a very nice gentleman (Dick) who does excellent work…however he isn’t very knowledgeable in Mopars.  However it is down to crunch time…I have to have the car ready by mid June 2008.

My situation is this:  the 2005 5.7L Hemi and transmission (W5A580/NAG1/722.6/Autostick...different names for the same transmission) were purchased from totaled 300C and they are already in the Challenger (lots of work by Dick to get the transmission in).  As I remember, “all” computers came with the engine and transmission.  However, Dick is having troubles getting the transmission to work.  I don’t know many specifics as our communication is difficult with my work schedule and the time zone difference.

Basic Assumptions
A.   Both engine and transmission are bone stock and will stay that way for the foreseeable future
B.   Challenger primarily used as a driver with a little fun on the backroads

Options I’ve heard of to get transmission working
1.   Use factory computers, but need to reprogram/reflash them…desired solution but I have no idea how to go about this!!!
2.   Stand alone engine management system (FAST XFI or AEM’s Universal EMS) with PCS Automatic Transmission Controller … still have a problem of getting speed data to the PCS unit
3.   Use PCS Automatic Transmission Controller only and reflash/swap current automatic ECM to a manual ECM … still have a problem of getting speed data to the PCS unit

Questions
1.   Are these the only ways to get the transmission running in an older car, or are there other options?
2.   What details/steps am I missing from the options? (i.e. in option #2 I list FAST and PCS as solutions, however I don’t know what parts and any other items and/or actions that I need to accomplish)
3.   What is the best way to get speed data to whatever controller that needs it?

Bottom line:  I don’t know what I don’t know...so I need your help.  Please be as specific as possible in your responses, as I will use your information to help out my mechanic who is 5000 miles away.

Thank you VERY much in advance!

v/r,
Sean

Sean, Welcome to C-C.com. Interesting project you have going. Most of us are not into the newer product that you are dealing with but there have been a few doing similar swaps, we also have some true professionals that frequent the board so hopefully someone will be able to give you some legitimate input.
Thank you for your service to our country & we look forward to your return home. Keep us updated with your progress.

Try contacting conv340 on here.  He was working on trying to put one in his Cuda.  You can read about it here:

Page 3 or 4 discusses some of the transmission issues.
