Cuda Disc Brake Upgrade - Need Opinions
« on: December 29, 2001 - 05:30:56 PM »
Hi all, need your help/advice. I'm building a VERY original looking 71 Hemi Cuda convertible clone(just like the car pictured in my flashing icon) everything under the hood will be correct as to part# and will even be date code correct for the year. Here's the dilemma, I'm hiding a 472 crate Hemi under all the stock accessories, it will look stock but it will run a wee bit stronger (sort of like a scalded dog!)

The one upgrade I wish to add other than frame connectors and some mild suspension upgrades like urethane bushings and a beefier sway bar is a better front braking system.

I want to go with disc brakes but a little better than the factory stuff, the only thing I don't like about the non-factory performance systems I've seen are that they use a modern looking master cylinder that I think looks like crap in the middle of all the correct OEM equipment. .....

So, here's the question:

What braking system can you guys recomend that uses good quality aftermarket disc brakes, a stock APPEARING Chrysler OEM type master cylinder, and a hidden or factory appearing proportioning valve? Keep in mind I want it to at least appear basically correct under the hood. Try to be specific and include company names and part numbers for the application if you can. I'll be running factory 15 x 7 Rallye wheels. If no good aftermarket systems come to mind what later model MOPAR disc brakes (single piece rotor design) would you go with ? (again, please be specific as to part #'s etc.)

Thanks!
Scott

hey i won't be much help, but i've used aftermarket kits, and was still able to retain the stock master cylinder, and proportioning valve. I don't think i've ever seen a kit that required a special master cylinder?

BadHemi ~

I actually have e-body brakes on my Charger R/T.  When I bought it, it was brakeless in the front.  They wanted $1500 in parts and labor to do my brakes ... some kind of 'special' setup.  Well, while we like to keep things original, I wanted to drive it!  So we did a swap that way.

I'll have to get Hubby to look here for ya' as he did the job and could tell you all about it. ;)  Not sure if it's what would work for you.

Your project reminds me of a friend up here with a 69 Coronet clone.  Drives us crazy that he calls it an R/T.   ::)  It is a nice-lookin' car, tho, I'll give 'im that!

May I ask the reason for your doing this car the way you're doing it?  Just curious....

I'm doing it this way because I have always wanted a hemi Cuda convertible and since they only made 11 of them from the factory in 1971 (7 both domestic and 4 for export sales) and now a real restored example costs nearly $500,000.00 (Yes, really!) I'm building one sort of like I would have ordered it myself, only for about one fifth the cost (yes, even clone Hemi's can be expensive as hell!  :-/  You see that Hemi Orange with white Bill Boards in my flashing icon? I took that pic back in 1984, when I saw that car (one of the best ORIGINAL Hemi Cuda's in existance) the obsession to own one began, a clone is as close as I'll get short of winning the Lottery ;)

The only thing that won't be original on mine other than minor suspension and brake upgrades will be the VIN# on the dash. BUT, keep this in mind, I will NEVER actually claim it's real, a clone is always a clone, no more, no less.......But it will be a DAMN nice clone ;D

LOL!  You just knew I'd freak on that price, didn't ya'? ;)

Yup, I've noticed most of the guys around here are purty darn cool about claiming the truth about their cars.  Of course, around here, if you don't, you'll probaby get 'caught' anyway!  Good thing, if you ask me!

I surely want to see your cars!  Pics, pics, pics!  I'll just 'pic' at ya' til I do!

Well, I'll have to get back to you ... kids are already in Bluebelle waiting for our little McDonald's trip and then I actually have to CLEAN HOUSE for our New Year's party tonite.  (A chance for Chally to catch up ... tee hee!)

HAPPY NEW YEARS!

The biggest factory parts swap is the  11 3/4"  C body discs sorry i don`t know all the details but I have the parts to do mine.
I `m  glad you are building what you want 11 wasn`t enough to go around, even as a clone  it will still be worth over 100k, we cloned a 440 6 pack auto 71 conv  & it appraised at 70k

I'm still a little uncertain on color at this point but it's looking like I'll go that way (It's actually Hemi Orange/TorRed on Hemi Orange/TorRed) but I do like the combo. I'm trying to avoid darker colors simply for ease of maintainance.....If I had a full time detailer handy I'd paint it triple black  8)
