Six Pack Idle Mixture Adjustment
« on: January 31, 2008 - 10:45:13 AM »
My new six pack set up seems to be too rich on the idle mixture and adjusting the center carb is all the TSM says to do, the engine responds normally to that ajustment but even when set on a lean idle it smells rich and my vaccum is a little low. I see the tiny screws in the base of the outboards and I'm guessing those are the idle mixture screws, are you supposed to adjust those as well? if so I have no idea how I'm going to get to the rear one as it's burried by the center carb. or is this just the way six packs operate?  thanks

Do your spark plugs look black? You just might have to use smaller jets.

I didn't think the main jets effected the idle? it idles through all three carbs because covering any one of them at  idle will kill the engine, that's why I thought one or both of the outboards are the rich spot, I don't know that though. other than idle it seem at least to run fine, the roads are so bad I haven't been able to go drive it yet.

Jets do not affect idle , float levels & mixture screws do , a rich smell can be just overlap in the cam, I would check plug color , you are correct the small screws in the base of the outboard carbs are mixture screws , I usually set them 1/2-3/4 turn out but they can be adjusted for fine tuning

Interesting, I just put them on as they came out of the box, I'm at over 3000 ft here so it's very possible they're too rich. I was told there is a kit of some kind that puts an angle on the screws of the rear carb so it can be adjusted running , I can't find one anywhere, anyone know anything about that?

My six pack smells rich at an idle too, but the plugs look fine. I think it's just cam overlap like CP said. Promax has outboard base plates that can be adjusted while on the car.http://promaxcarbs.bizland.com/Sixhome.chtml

Fuel pressure too high?

I doubt the pressure is high, it's just a stock pump.  I'll set the mixture on the outboards and see if that doesn't help.

It can be worth checking, as I don't think Holleys like much over 7 psig. I finally put in one of those SW electric fuel pressure gauages, so I can mount it in my car, and my pressure was too low. The little cheapy guage on my carb fuel line that I spent $15 on was indicating way to high.

On the front outboard carb, screw the mixture screws in then back out 1/3 to 1/2 max turn. Then pull the rear carb and do the same. I used to have a 90 degree tool that could reach the back ones years ago, but while I was working on the road, someone broke into my shop in 2002 and stole 80k in snap on tools from me. Oh did that hurt my heart.
