Challenger conv... low production numbers
« on: February 24, 2008 - 10:34:36 AM »
...living in a Chrysler town all m life I just never realized how rare Challenger convertibles are in comparison to other cars, we always had plenty of them here and still have about a dozen in town all these years later...I just looked at some numbers the other day and realized there were less than 6K made, all engines, both years... there were always plenty here in New Castle (population 15K) but apparently not many anywhere else...if every single one still existed, there still aren't many to choose from...why didn't we buy more of them in 1970-71, why weren't they a bigger sales success...I was there and I don't know the answer

...will the new Challenger really be the sales success we all hope it is

I was talking to a friend the other day that works at a dealership that Chrysler Corp is trying to become a small (niche) vehicle company.  He was telling me about how there are plans to kill off some of the line up (Dakota) and then give each brand (Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep) their own chasis line ups.  They would still share engines and trannies but change up everything else so there would not be so much overlap.  He also talked about the 2008 Challengers being all SRT8's with auto's, then the 2009's all SRT8's with manuals.  2010 Challengers would then start getting v6's and 5.7's.  Seems like a long time to wait for one that I might be able to afford.  He did say that none of this was set in stone, so there may be hope.

As far as why there were not more convertable Challengers built back in the day, maybe people didn't realize just how cool they really are?  I wasn't around then, so don't blame me!   :)

Yeah, there has always been a few around here and I had my chance at a couple but missed out for one reason or another. 450 for a 71 Barracuda vert in 87 that was a driver but with rusty floors. 1250 in 86 for a really nice 71 Challenger with slapstick, air and 14" rallyes. It is one of the major regrets I have, not picking one of those cars up.

Ok my  :2cents: on the new one I think they said we can only rush out a few the first year so let’s allow the dealers to make more on each unit (10k mark up +)  :screwy:

I can’t believe people will pay that much over for one  :clueless: It’s good to have deep pockets   maybe it will be a classic.

If they look at the mustang sales line there moving cars at every price... :bigshades:

My hope is that 09 we will have r/t s and standard 6,s(charger options) like ford ya know chevy ...

Maybe 2010 we can have a challenger convertible let’s… hope so … I hope the new Chrysler will make it.

As for the 70-71 it was the 70's who knows convertibles’ in general went away  :clueless: :dunno:

I hate Chryslers trickle down mentality on model sales. They pump out all the profit they can and then add new options/models/colors to keep the profit coming. I wish they would put out everything at once like they did in late '69 with the new E-bodies.

All I can say is low production numbers is what makes them worth what they are to day (70-71)  :grinyes: Only time will tell on the new ones.  :dunno:
