My buddy has one of these behind a 383 and has not had any problems. The thing about the OD trans is that the main shaft is smaller than the regular 833, therefore it is weaker. It is still strong but not as strong as an 833 from the 60's and 70's. Granted he does not take his to the track or beat on it. Personally, I agree, I would not put this behind a big block. :working:

400 pound feet? Not hardly. The only issue the aluminum case has is with hard abuse, like drag racing, or road racing, the countershaft can enlarge the bores in the case. That's over long term... Like thousands of miles of hard abuse. Otherwise, it is just as strong as any iron case with a similar input shaft. It uses a deeper first gear (3.09 vs 2.8 or so) and 3rd is direct 1:1, 4th is OD. The price is right with the bell and a working trans. They are fairly common units, as they came in pickup trucks for years in the late 70s and early 80s. If the teeth on the syncros and gears are worn, it gets expensive to rebuild them.. Assuming one cares about replacing what's worn. New syncros does not mean rebuilt on a 4sp.

I raced my Duster for 8 seasons with an 833OD behind a built 440 , it pulled the front wheels off the line & did 60` in 1.48 , never hurt the tranny
