Manual tranny installation

Talked to the guy at the machine shop who`s doing my engine.
He said that there are some bad scratches on the crank where the thrust bering sits  . He saked me if I have a 4-speed tranny in my car, and if so, that it probably is  the reason for the scratches on the crank. He told me that you have to tap at the end of the crank, towards the front of the engine, before the install of the tranny. I didn`t find any info about this in my shop manual.
Would be great if any of guys could confirm this. I did have a look at the old thrust bearing and it seems as there are some small pieces
missing on the bearing. Look at the pics on the right side of the bearing

I have never done this ever .....you should have very tight clearance on the thrust so what difference is tapping the crank froward going to make , + the thrust brg is not capable of taking anywhere near the load that the main brgs can tak running paralelle to the crank so tapping on the crank is more likely to damage the main

Figured that too, for what I understand it`s not recommended to use any violence to install the damper on to the crank.
That would ruin the end play, right? And tapping the opposit direction would also ruin the endplay?
Question remains, what could have caused the scratches on the crank?

The trust bearing doesn't look like it worn from the photo. It's probably what CP said DIRT, that will kill bearings..

If the thrust face on the crank is scored then you are in trouble.  Is this what he meant?

I`m afraid so, I`m not sure. Hope to take a look at it soon.
If so, I suppose the only option is to get a new crank?

He told me that Chebbies have thrust face oversize bearing, so that you can grind the face to a new surface and put in the oversize bearing.

The dark spot in the mark I made on the pic is almost as a crater .025-.035 deep.
