Tractor Trailer Crash
« on: April 02, 2008 - 10:21:40 PM »

The other afternoon a family driving West on the Yellowhead around 184 St. spotted a semi going the wrong way down the other side of the highway.

They started taping it's route just in time to see the truck hit a cement barrier on the side of the overpass at 184 St...it then flipped over the side and crashed onto train tracks below where it burst into a huge fireball !!

Cars were going into the ditch all over to avoid being hit head on...last witness had just came over the crest only to be met by the truck who would have hit him...but at that point had gone over the edge

If he had made it up the road a little more it would have been more than tragic as there are no ditches any longer for the cars to escape the truck

The video is just  :faint:

It has been suggested that he suffered from a diabetic seizure

May never know what happened...it is most tragic but thank God that there were not a lot more casulaties

I saw that on the news tonight, very scary.  And yes, could have been more tragic.   :-\

As safety manager for a motorcoach company, that's essentially my nightmare, only with a bus full of people.

There's an old joke in the bus industry: I want to die like my father did, in his sleep.  Not screaming, like the 47 passengers on his bus when they drove off the cliff.

This happened about very close to my office.  Apparently the driver was diabetic.  While I feel sorry for the driver and his family I have a hard time thinking that semis are being driven around by people who could pass out while driving.  I'm sure if we all knew a lot more about what goes on in the trucking industry (long hours, drugs, etc.) we would be scared to get out on the road! :22yikes:

How true...the two trailer 150ft semi that hit me almost head on a couple years ago...said he didn't see me  :faint:

Well preliminary testings are coming out are saying he was not hypoglycemic before the crash...but will continue to do more testings on his blood to see what his blood sugar was at time of death and also the presence of any medications...drugs or toxins

It is most sad that he died....but knowing how busy that road is....it is a real wonder that no one else was injured or worse....killed

It is amazing that no one else was hurt.  I think he had traveled quite a distance going the wrong way.  When I first heard the news I thought it might be a suicide run or a joy ride.  Then there was speculation on hypoglycemia but that may be disproved.  I hope they find the cause.

A few weeks ago something similiar happened outside my bedroom window. The truck was much smaller and a Chebby to boot. A pickup truck was going northbound and the driver had a seizure. He went across the southbound lane, jumped a ditch, through my next door neighbors fence and into their basement window.  They have a split level house so the truck was sticking into their basement. All of this happened at about 8:30 in the morning, right outside of my bedroom window and I slept through it. The driver was pulled out and taken to the hospital. I met him the other night when he came by to apologize and he said that the seizure was caused by Chantex (sp?). There is a warning on the label to a chance of seizures, but rare. He had several broken ribs among other injuries. I told my neighbor that they are lucky that it was a Chebby, if it had been a Mopar the truck would have ended up in the back yard.
