I have a 489 shure grip in my 70 manual Challenger,some times going in reverse on hard turn you can hear clunking from the rear,I changed the oil and added anti chatter oil and it fixed it a lot so looks like a rebuild is on the way,due to parts being rare in Australia I shal have to order the rite parts from the states,I would like to find out how to tell if it is clutch or cone LSD before I order a kit and as yet have not removed the center from the car.

Could it possibly be the drum brakes turning on themselves? I have heard that some drums have worn or too larger holes over time and can be twisted, slightly. Also, I thought Sure Grips were suppose to make a little click or clunk from the inners doing what they were designed to do, bite? Maybe only around corners, who knows lol. Just some suggestions....... :-[

489 sure grip is a cone type. Not easily rebuildable but there are some threads on doing it here on the board somewhere. You probably can get all of the parts you need in Aussie (bearings, seals etc). But the biggest thing you need is an ingenious machinist to do the internal restoration work. Order bearings and seals by the part number on them - don't worry about trying to Mopar brand it. Extra money for nothing. Mopar bearings are usually Timken in a blue box for 3 times the price. Check to see if the R/T E49 Chargers in Aussie had an 8-3/4 rear. Chances are they did and there is your parts source if they used 489s.
