451 Stroker or 512 Stroker?
« on: July 18, 2011 - 11:13:43 AM »
I have read some on this and from what I have been reading there is some debate on this subject from what I was reading there is no debate that the 451 is a better build then the regular 440 however putting stroker against stroker what is the better all around motor and which is the most likely to be the more durable of the two. Personal experience from you guys or your friends is apprciated but just plain opinions help too. Sow what do you guys think?

, the 400 block is stronger than the taller 440 , the 230 casting 400 is the strongest block , the 451 retains the factory rod lenght & ratio so my vote fo rthe unltimate build is the 400 / 451 , second is the 512 /440

Hey Neil I was wondering would it be better to get my stock 440 crank machined to fit and use the stock rods or should I just buy the kit from 440source? If I dont get the 440source kit I can get some really good pistons.

Oh I forgot, what kind of power can you get from a 451 anyway?

Either will work , machining the crank costs a few $$ , it will need to have the mains cut down to the smaller main journal size & it will obviously need to be balanced so you need to see what that would cost compared to buying a new part , for $150 440 source will balance the kit + you get new rods with high strength bolts . What I am saying is it may not save any $$ to rebuild the old parts & just buy new pistons so check pricing carefully  .
The power potential is high , but horsepower is like a piece of string , how long is a piece of string ??
How much $$ do you want to spend ?? I am sure you could make more power than you will need with Indy heads & a solid or roller cam , big carb & headers , It is all about air flow in & out ultimatly
