1971 Cuda - Info about VIN requested
« on: April 22, 2008 - 07:43:19 PM »
My friend purchased a 71 Cuda a couple of years ago, and I want to help him decode the VIN.  The VIN is BS23H1B442358.  I have decoded the serial number, but have yet to determine how rare (if at all) the car is.  Can anyone tell me where I can find production numbers on this car?   I think the color is B5 Blue, it is a 340 4 gear car that is in the process of being restored.  He wants to change the color, and I want to help him determine if it's a good idea, or if the car is rare, then restore it back to original.

BS23H1B442358

BS = Barracuda, Special ('Cuda)

23 = 2 door hardtop

H = 340 4bbl

1 =  1971

B = Hamtramck, Michigan assembly plant

442358 = sequence number

There's a VIN and fender tag decoder available under the Tools link on the home page.

Thanks for the help guys.....................I was able to decode the fender tag.......................now for the last question.................where can I find the production numbers on this car?   FYI I met a guy last night who claims to have a really nice 70 440 6-pack air grabber 4-spd GTX (he couldn't remember the color off the top of his head, but said it was dark tan ext with light tan int), and a 68 Charger (details unknown) for sale.  I didn't realize that this guy lives just outside of my hometown and collects Mopars.  I met him last year at a car show when he was showing his 69 Superbird.   He knows what he has, so there won't be the "deal of the century" dealing with him, but he seems to be honest and very knowledgable.  It turns out that I know two guys that bought cars off him (71 Satellite, and 68 Charger) and both individuals were extremely satisfied with their purchases.  This guy is fussy, and likes his cars to have the "kinks" worked out of them, whether he does it, or he finds original cars that are in exception condition.  Let me know if anyone is interested, and I'll pass his info on.

So I have managed to determine that this car was 1-1141 340 cars produced in '71.  Does anyone know how I could narrow down the production numbers from here?  I have spent many hours searching the internet, and so far I haven't found any info that I feel is credible.  I searched a 69 Hemi Charger a couple of years ago and had very few issues finding how many cars were made, with what options and how many were sent to Canada.  Any direction is much appreciated..............Thanks!
