wipers for a 70 Challenger.
« on: February 01, 2008 - 06:51:29 AM »
When I bought my Challenger I didn't check to see if the wipers worked. I picked up a second wiper motor when I realised they didn't work. I found that one terminal was burnt off, the lower one on the motor, so I fitted the other motor, it didn't work either. I had current at most of the terminals. I suspected the switch which was poorly earthed.
That is where I am at the moment, I have no diagrams here in Australia of this layout, I have downloaded a circuit diagram of a 70 Challenger but it is not with me ( its 50mls away ).   :clueless:
I can get the motor to turn sometimes and I can get it to run backwards.
Can anybody tell me what voltages I should have on each terminal ( 2 speed ).   :dunno:
I saw a post on another thread and it showed the back of 2 different switches, mine is a 2 speed but looking at that post they said it was a 3 speed? I only have 3 positions, off, position 1( low), position 2 ( high ).
I am on a friends computor without a printer so any pics or info I can copy down would be greatly appreciated.

I am going through the wiring, the low beam head lights voltage was 6.5 volts at the light, so I installed a relay,  :22yikes: , daylight. It has the advantage of taking the load off of the headlight switch.
I have also installed more earths, battery to front radiator support panel, battery to firewall and more to come. Will be bypassing the amp guage which is working fine at the moment, and the main charging circuit will be re-routed solidly bypassing the firewall connector.

Thanks in advance for any and all help,

    David
Dave

This should get you where you need to be hopefully
I made them a little larger than usual just to make sure you can read them
Just be patient, Imagshack can sometimes get overloaded, but they will eventually load up.
This is all the info I found in the Service Manual.

Even though I'm in the electronics field, following those charts is...  :banghead:

Thanks R/T hedkace, those circuits are similar to what I have at home, which means they are not with me. They helped me greatly, thanks.   :2thumbs:
I have been able to get my wipers working now, the 2nd wiper motor just needed a clean up and there was no earth at the wiper switch. I ran an earth wire I made directly from the switch mounting screw to a solid earth on the firewall, fixed.
I will be doing similar to the instrument cluster to stop my right indicater light on dash coming on when head lights turned on and hopefully I will have more light at the instruments.   :woohoo:

Thanks to you all, its great to have an extended group of like minded people willing to help out.

Well this last post is very debatable brother............................ :drunk:

Yes we call it both a ground and an earth but an earth is a more commonly used.

:clueless:  That is what makes it more interesting, trying to decipher the differences in our terminalogy seeing that both our countries speak english.  Being upside down all the time the ground seems to filter up into everything so we call it earth!   :dunno:

Somebody should start a thread using the different meanings that other countries use.
Aussies call it a boot, you Americians call it a trunk, we call it a bonnet you call it a hood. Aussies call it a ute, you Americians call it pickup or truck......  and so it can go on.  We call it a diff, you call it a third member.......   :burnout:

:2cents:  Not an electrician, but in our business, appliances, circuits are very important. There are two kinds of grounds, one goes through the system this ground we call a common. The other goes outside the system & literally to the earth, so we call it an earth ground, this is the one that keeps you from being killed should everything else fail.
This being said the way most of the systems on our autos seem to ground back the the frame rather than through the system via wiring earth would be appropriate.

You Austrailians always seemed a bit "whacky".
But this post comfirms it!  :screwy:

Would make for an "interesting" thread though  :2thumbs: :poopoke: :smilielol:
