EMERGENCY - Tech Support needed on new brake job...
« on: May 24, 2008 - 01:04:28 PM »
Hey guys/gals,

I'm in the process of installing new calipers, pads, rotors, bearings, seals, brake hoses...

The new calipers came with some sort of a pad spring - a bracket that stretches the width of the caliper slide bolts, with hooks at each end.  Thin gauge metal, does not seem that it would even apply any tension anywhere...  The old caliper set up does not have these.  I have no idea where they go.  Does anybody have pictures or can at least provide instructions as to where these go?

73 Barracuda, 318, front disc setup.

I've got everything torn apart and need to have it back together this evening before I leave for OH.  Any help is DEEPLY appreciated.  Thanks.

Well, 10 minutes of searching and I couldn't find a picture of them installed. The wrap around your pins on each caliper like you thought. they should be placed so they put a little tensin on the brake pads. They are designed and called anti-rattle springs. All they need to do is put enough tension on a brake pad so you don't hear them bouncing around. car will drive and stop just fine without them, you may just hear the brake pads shifting more.

I always leave those anto-rattle springs off.

Well, I know what they do, I just dont know exactly where they go - in between the pad and the calipers I presume, but where?  Towards the outside or inside?

Wow - yeah that does help.  It still doesn't show what holds that clip in place - it looks like the bushings hold it in place, but I don't see how that's possible.

Eh well - I just put it together without 'em - the old setup didn't have 'em, nor did it have those positioning clips on the back side of the caliper.  Only one side had those (of course, the side that didn't is the side that locked up, which makes me a little nervous...)  But everything seems to be working fine.

I'll worry about 'em again when I start the big tear down next year.

Thanks everyone!

the clip is locked into place by the cross pins , th majority of the clip sits outside the caliper but the hooked end sits inside the caliper & locks inside the slider / cross pins
