gas prices in the states vary widely because of state taxes and pollution rules.  the federal gas tax is 18.4 cents but if youre in New York the state is gonna tack on another 44.5 cents while if youre in Wyoming the state tax is 14 cents.  if youre in an urban area youre probably buying reformulated gas which tends to cost more than the regular stuff.

your point about government is well taken.  theres no entity on earth in the oil to gasoline cycle that makes as much money off the process as government.  the stuff costs you 3.60 a gallon at the pump 50 cents of which goes directly to government.  you purchase the product with after tax income.  that means you have to gross around 5 dollars to clear the 3.60. that effectively makes the governments profit on a gallon of gasoline right around 2 dollars a gallon and they dont own a single oil rig or refinery.

i dont think the gas prices will do much to influence my challenger driving ( when i get it on the road ) im building a small block and even if i only was getting 13mpg i can just close my eyes and pretend im one of the locals driving their 3/4 ton 4x4s as commuter cars.

...I drive very few miles per day/week...I doubt $10 per gallon would really change my habits much...I wouldn't like it, but I'm not going to spend the rest of my life waiting for anything :roflsmiley:

I think by the time I finish mine that gas will be so out of control that I might could afford to listen to it idle in my driveway for a bit.  :roflsmiley: I also dont think that its any small coincidence that the gas companies just reported record profits again. The second highest profit of ANY company in U.S. history. :swear:

I'm usually not one for government involvement in anything, but the oil companies' profits are out of control. The CEO of Chevron (maybe exxon?) got a billion dollar bonus last year. Billion. Either their profits need to be regulated or the feds should just step in and run them like they do with business that get nailed for tax evasion and can't pay up. The price of oil is singlehandedly screwing up our inflation numbers, causing increases in the price of just about everything due to shipping costs. It really should be treated like a utility, and regulated as such, with the huge impact it has on our economy.

I will not be taking both cars to shows this year like in the past as it is double the cost in gas and my wife says we will just leave one at home. I'm not sure if I'll drive the Challenger out to the Mopar Nationals. If gas keeps going up it will cost me way more than I want to spend even though I've drove one of my Mopar cars to the Nats every year since I started going in 1985. It is only 460 miles each way and with driving around I figure 1,000 miles at $4.00 a gallon will set me back $250.00 at today's prices and it may even go higher. I wish the government would get involved as it really is going to effect our economy and way of life if the gas prices keep going up.

NOBODY deserves a BILLION dollar bonus. I dont care who you are.

That's where the government really needs to get involved. Unrealistinc conpensation for executives at the expense of the employees, taxpayers, and consumers.

The Australian govt is addicted to gas tax money, they get a percentage of the final price as well as a percentage of the refined price, double dipping.   :hyper:  Therefore as the price rises so does their take go up so they won't bother to reduce the price.   :poopoke:   :walkaway:
