Cuda Full Quarters Install
« on: February 24, 2008 - 11:17:32 AM »
I recently purchased full rear r/l quarter panels from Goodmark. Has anyone installed these yet, if so are there any picturs of the installation. We have to remove the old skins since they were installed incorrectly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We just did a full rebuild, including OEM quarters on a 70 Cuda, as well as a 71 Challenger. The photo gallery for the 70 is up here

http://www.autorust.com/hj0.html

I will get the 71 up soon
Installed very nicely, no problems at all. The 71 Convertible was a bit of a challenge, but again, very nice quality and great fit.

Work from the dutchman panel out in all directions.  Quarter panel skin where it meets roof slips under. Drill 3 or 4 holes where they meet before you put it on. Spot weld rear window track from your original to the new one after the quarter is on. Prep all areas first where contact weld areas are by sanding off e coat. Weld prime a light coat on those areas. You may or may not need to bend lips that slide over contact areas so that they can go over. Careful!!. Pointed end of pry bar lines up rear valence meeting areas. As you adjust fitting, check everywhere. A smidgen here can change another area big. I used a 3M pad on the inside of the quarter scuffing it, then put shutz on just like the factory did. Before final welding, check meeting gap areas of door and trunk. Adjust trunk and door if nescessary.

I hope you have a good collection of clamps/vice grips of all types and shapes because you're going to be using a lot of them to get everything in place and keep it like that before you do any spot welds.

I will be leading the quarter panel meet areas shortly and will be doing a thread on that. Bondo telegraphs itself noticably and can also crack at that area. I don't care what brand it is. Metal this or that. Body filler should only be used as a skin coat and not a gap filler.

TC--age old question. Are you hanging a quarter while the car is on a rotisserie?

Yes,

But frame connectors were put on first. I rested the car on 8 jacks first. Then welded it strategically so it wouldn't flex. Then hoisted it back up, welded it.

So you can do quarters as long as the longitudinal length of the body is supported. Which I did already.

I'm just getting 70 cuda back from the local media blaster! Yippie. I'm about to install a trunk pan, outer wheel houses, extensions and full quarters. nerviously.
My question is, can I remove both quarters at the same time? I will not be using a jig of any kind other than jack stands etc. I have been reading frantically on this subject and get a lot of different opinoins. I'd like to cut the car apart and them fit & install. But the general concense is to do one side at a time. But ultimatly I will have a quarter and the pan out completely at one time.

Any additional info would be great.

As long as you do have it supported on stands correctly you should be pretty safe.  The rear is more rigid when doing one side at a time, which is the preffered methodology.  I would suggest removing one side then clamping the new quater in place, before removing the other quarter. :2thumbs:

Post some pics of the naked shell please. :clapping:

One at a time I say.

On my car, the right original quarter panel on the very end; the over hang is out further than the left side was I replaced. Things should go back on like they came off. My concern was that the trunk lid gaps remained the same as they were before. By doing one at a time, it ensures that you have copied exactly how it was on before to keep your gaps as they were. Even if they appear innaccurate like on my car.

Remember these cars don't have perfect panel alignment compared to todays cars.

I will post pictures as I go. I most likely will do I side at a time. the next question of the day... I have suffered from telegraphing on the sailpanel on a previous Cuda resto. Stinks.. I had the lead stripped off a car and Duraglassed it. Guys at the bondo store tolds me there would be no problems whats so ever! Boy they were wrong. The car was base clear black.. after about a month I could see very tiny lines defining the plastic filler line from the original steel. you had to look closely but it was there.  SOOOOO how the heck do you do lead work on your own!!!!???? I see the "starter kit" in the Eastwood catalog all the time.
