Its unfortunate that the fender tag was pulled as well as the doors....I would be skeptical on this to say the least....what happened to the title or a registration for the car??

In my opinion, the car is just a street rod. Every way we come up with to help identify for you, a negative is thrown back at us. If it is original u code, it still isnt worth squat now. Have the dot and troopers inspect it, put a new dot vin on it and drive it. With everything missing I feel you have a boat anchore, if your looking for value. If your like me, throw an engine in it, tittle it and throttle down. :burnout:

:iagree:  Take pics.  As Barry said we can tell if the block has been restamped.  If it has not been restamped you will know the car came with a 440.  This will narrow your search alot.  From there you will have 4 possibilities for the VIN:  440 RT 440+6 RT 440 RT/SE 440+6 RT/SE. From there you can try to find your car using the 4 prefixes with you sequence number.  Once it is found for sure then you can get a state issued VIN.  Barry can explain the proper procedure on how to go about this.

will try to post pictures. cleaned it up today and put it in the shop, I have looked at the block stamping it looks clean i am not being pressured in any way on this  purchase. the man i'm dealing with is not making any claims. the car has a 77coin on k member it has a skidplate it has 5 leafs on driver and 6 on pass no air no power steering and a remnant of black stipping, it had carpet and black vinyl roof. i'm sure and have always kept in mind that it is possible and probably to good to be true, but the possibilty is well worth the search thank you guys for all you help and input.

everything with vin or anything other than the last eight on body was destroyed in a fire the car was perchased used in mid 70's by previus owner he has the matching numbers 440 block (verified by block casting numbers (in process of negotiating purchase) he claims it had a six pack setup on the car when he bought it.(he still has setup) he replaced it with 4barrel intake (it was under all the trash in the bottom of car casting number is 68 vintage) he dragged raced with local dodge sponsership possible vins such as js23u0b and js23vob have been run with local law enforcement help but no hits last titled 78 79 could there possibly be a jh23 440 6 car there is no sign of se package js29. sorry to be so long but the number hunt is driving me crazy.

Maybe I am just not getting it, but if the previous owner had the title in his name, should it not be possible to obtain a title thru him in the state that it was last titled? Or was it that he hadn't titled it since 1970? My DMV in AK had a listing of previous owners of my 70 Cuda that I had to pay for, but I got it. The DMV also had a listing of ALL vehicles that were still in my name. If someone had the vehicle titled in their name as the rightful owner, I do not see where the problem would be. See if the guy has any of his old race forms, the VIN may be on there....or insurance paperwork, oh wait, those probably burned up in the fire too....Run with what is known....I don't know if the SE package was available with the sixpacks....I do not know of any other VIN possibilities, but here are the ones that I know of....

we have been trying to get the vin number narrowed down that is what the questions i have been asking are about i have not asked but i'm sure he dosn't have any insurance records from the mid 70,s the problem is this was in a pile of junk and forgotten about for 20+ years till i started to dig this all up thanks for all the answers l have gotten it has helped me to narrow the vin to what i believe it to be js23vobxxxxxx. with this info we are going to try to file for lost title and cross our fingers but it is pretty much the only possibilty

Are the torsion bars still with the car? My JS29U R/T SE has 780/781 bars but i can't say for certain if a 440-6 had different ones. Also if the steering box is present, check the date on it. Mine is dated 10-24 on the box with a scheduled production date of 01-09-70. That would at least give you a start on a build date window on your car. Our cars have build dates represented in various ways depending on the part :thumbsup:

If you go through the process to get a state assigned VIN number, they should be able to tell you what the original VIN number was based on the body number. The FBI has those records.

Your local DMV should have a form for it.

It depends on the state. In PA, you cannot obtain vehicle information unless you own the vehicle. Also, they only keep records for 5 years from the last date of registration, so even if you own the vehicle, after 5 years of no registration, they cannot tell you who owns the car. They can tell you if the vehicle is stolen, however, because they never get rid of that information.

Fl is pretty much the same way also.  The FBI must not be that way.  Going through the FBI seems to be the way to go.

I had a friend that had a car stolen once. The car was recovered, but the VIN information had been removed. He told me that a guy from the FBI came in, and cut a hole at some specific spot on the vehicle. The complete VIN number was stamped there, and he used it to verify the identity of the vehicle. That was a Chevy. I don't know if Chrysler did the same thing.

the fbi has all records all citys have a automotive theft task force thats who you want to talk to they will come to you its free ,and run the numbers and check the block at that point. you can have them sign off on a new vin if both match .the reason you cant get the info is dot will do a regional national and international search about 15 minutes your people didnt check all . chrysler can install a new vin or a company that makes vins but u need the feds blessing . gm did a gto judge not to long ago . also when authenticating a car blow off the so called gurus , the dot guys are who really counts . many cars have been nailed at customs .i have my locals run my cars before purchase .my post here is from first hand experience honest restorers have nothing to fear. o yeah check for 5\16 or3\8 fuel line clips for engine size . :droolingbounce:
