    How can I flush my 727 transmission myself?

    I'm changing my trans oil & filter and would like to drain the oil out of the converter, but there is no way to get to the converter and drain it.  Should I try and flush it myself or can I with no special transmission tools?  If I can flush it myself can someone please explain how?

    is there a drain plug on the front face of the converter ? Some had them others didn`t

    There is no way to tell if there is a plug or not.  When I take the inspection plate off the front of the trans all I see is the flexplate. Is'nt that typical for the 727 A's?

    as you rotate the flex plate & converter around the threaded 1/8" pipe plug will become visible between 2 of the bolts if it has a drain

    Drain plug will be dead center of the converter bolt pads if it has one. Here is a pic with the drain plug in between the balancing weights that just happen to be on this pic.

    Thanks for your feed back so far.
      I’ve included two pictures on what I’m dealing with.  I’m sure both of you have seen these pictures a thousand times.  But, I don’t understand how I can even look for a plug when I can’t even see the weights on the torque converter.  The whole torque converter is covered by the gold colored “flex plate” I call it, except for the teeth.  Is this typically what you find?  BTW it’s a 73 cuda.  :1zhelp: :clueless:

    aftermarket B&M flex plate , these leave no room to get the drain plug out if it has one

    Here is the other thing you can do.

    Drop the pan,change your filter and pan gasket.   :working:

    Add 4 qts of new fluid to the trans, with 8 qts ready (2 one gallon jugs not 8 one quart bottles)

    Remove the REAR cooler line,put a pan under it with a piece of hose on the cooler line aiming at the pan.
     
    Start it up in NEUTRAL,add the fluid thru the filler tube as the old pumps out the rear line into the pan.

    When the fluid coming out is clean (or the two jugs are used up) shut it off and hook it all back up.

    Top off the trans fluid idling in NEUTRAL

    You have now done what I call "A poor man's transmission flush".  :lol:

    I second that, it works great and does for the most part the same thing as a flush machine that costs $10K.  Just make real sure to never let the pump run dry from getting low or introduce too much air into it as you pour the new fluid in.

    And the main reason to want to flush the system I know is to refresh the fluid but can it help with the harshnes of shifting also?

    It sounds like you have an issue with the kick-down linkage. Too forwardly placed on the carb stud, and that will do it. I have the opposite problem. I had to place a screw in the back of my linkage slot to the carb, so I could shift harder. I was in 3rd gear at 10 MPH before.  :eek4: I guess I'm shifting from 1st to 2nd at 2000 RPM+ now. It depends on how much I get on it. I can post a pic if you want tomorrow. By the way, I have a Trans-Go shift kit, so it is made to shift hard and snap my neck.    :ylsuper:
