Shame on me :-(
« on: May 04, 2008 - 08:29:35 PM »
Not sure if this should be posted here, but the inside of the windshield is technically the interrior of the car.

OK, here's my oops...

Over the winter I replaced some floor panels in my 1970 Cuda Convertible.  To keep this short and to the point, I covered up the dash during the project, but I forgot to cover the windshield.  In the process of grinding, some of the grinding sparks hit the windshield and have embedded themselves in the glass.

I was driving the car with the top down today and noticed the spots.  I reached over the top of the windshield thinking they were on the outside...they were not.  To my dissapointment, they were on the inside.  As soon as I felt them, I knew what they were. :banghead:

Does anyone have good advice as to how I can remedy this oops? :1zhelp:

I'm afraid there is probably nothing short of a new windshield that will take care of that.  A buddy did the sane thing, and nothing he tried to fix it with worked.   :violin:

About ten years ago I had run out of washer fluid in my Escort. I was on my way home one night with a very dirty windshield and I stopped at a 7-11, where they had just ploughed the snow to the sides of the lot. I grabbed a handful of snow to clean off my windshield. I didn't realize until the next day that somebody had spread very small cinders across the lot to help traction. I tried a lot of things too, but the only fix was a new windshield.

When i was building my car, My cousin and I were putting the interior in and using a Halogen lamp sitting on the hood for lighting. Well, guess who is still riding around with a SpongeBob shaped flower in the Windsheild. The Light melted the lexan between the glass.....

 :faint:

Brand new windsheild at the time. I'll be changing that next year when i get a dash.  :working:

Thanks everyone.  Nice to hear that I'm not the only one who somtetimes takes 2 steps forward, and one step back with his projects.  Guess we're all human!

I figured that there wasn't much that could be done...but I had to ask.

I'll post more photos of the car soon.  It does look sweet with the new tires and wheels.  The Cuda hood, hockey sticks, passenger side rear view mirror and rear exhaust valence are all on deck this year...will keep you posted.

What about that resin they use to repair star cracks and chips? I understand they use a type of vacuum to suck the resin into the glass. I wonder if there is a chance of filling the holes with that and polishing it out?

 :iagree:

It's worth a try before replacing the windshield.

I have had reasonable luck with finger nails and a flat razor, to work the stuff out of the glass.  The spot is still there, but the metal is not.  Partial solution, but might be workable?

A new windshield is the way to go but you may improve your current one by running brand new razor blades over the damaged area. Knocking the tops off of the "creators" caused by the sparks and digging out the grit can reduce the problem somewhat.

Hold the blades at a shallow angle, change blades often and clean with windex inbetween dead blades to keep scratching to a minimum.  Hold the blades with you hand and don't use a blade holder because too much torque will kill the glass. Also, only use one side of the blades, DON'T flip them over because the corners of the blades will be bend up slightly after use and will gouge.

The glass wont be perfect but it should look better

I had the same problem on a project of mine and used the razor blade trick, wasn't perfect but was a heck of a lot better.
